Billy Beane is the general manager of the baseball team Oakland Athletics, who have a budget of $41 million. Looking to expand the team's budget so he can buy some of the best competitive players, he goes to the manager, Art Howe, who refuses, citing the New York Yankees, who had just spent over $125 million on players.
When discussing the problem of buying good players for the Oakland A's, Billy's soon-to-be assistant general manager, Peter Brand, reveals a method of finding players that are within the team's budget. Using computer generated analysis, Billy and Peter discover hundreds of competitive but undervalued players who have been overlooked by some of the other baseball teams that are in the Major League; the two of them decide to buy some of the best players using this system.
At first, everyone doubts this new way of getting players; including Billy's own daughter. But as the number of games won by the team steadily rise, Billy Beane becomes something of a success story and his way of recruiting players soon becomes known within baseball as 'moneyballing'.
