Frank Goode's children are all grown up and they all live in different areas of America. Since the death of his wife, ties with his kids have somewhat dwindled but now it's time to catch up and make up for lost time. He starts by inviting the kids (and their kids) over for a barbecue, but modern living being what it is; everyone pulls out at the last minute. Frank decides that if they're unavailable to come to him, he will go to them. Setting off on his journey across the states - and ignoring advice from his doctor - Frank plans to surprise each one of his kids.
