A man who is known only as The Driver moonlights as a getaway driver at night, when he is not doing his day job as a movie stunt driver and mechanic. He only has one rule as a getaway driver: as long as his clients return to his car within five minutes, he will help them get away. If they take longer than five minutes, he leaves and doesn't help them.
In his free time, The Driver befriends his neighbour, a young woman named Irene, whose husband is in jail. She is left raising their son on her own. Her husband, Standard, is released from jail early for good behaviour and soon after his discharge, he needs The Driver's help: Standard owes protection money to a group of gangsters but he can't pay it back, so as payment, he is being forced into carrying out a robbery. The Driver agrees, but only because he has fallen in love with Irene and fears that she will be hurt in the ensuing problem. But when the robbery goes wrong, a contract is put on The Driver to kill him.
