Years after his defeat of Majin Buu, Goku is becoming restless from the lack of a true fight. When the God of destruction - Bils - awakens for the first time in ages, he hears that a Super Saiyan defeated Frieza, and goes in search of the one who did it. King Kai tries to convince Goku not to fight the God, but his restlessness gets the better of him, and Goku confronts Bils. Being no match for the God of destruction, Goku is defeated, leaving Earth defenceless as Bills searches for a more challenging fight.
In 2013, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods opened in Japan at number one in the box office rankings. It pulled in just under seven and a half million USD in its opening two days, and went on to be Japan's eleventh highest grossing film of the year, earning fifty million USD. The film is the eighteenth film in the Dragon Ball series and due to its new and improved animation style, was the first ever Japanese film to be screened in IMAX. The film was released in Japan on Blue Ray and DVD in September 2013, with a western dubbed version screened at selective theatres in England and the US is early August 2014.
