Violet and her friends, Heather and Rose, are students at the formerly all-male Seven Oaks University. Their mission, while they are students there, is to rid the campus of the 'male barbarism' that is still around. They also run the suicide prevention centre, where they help depressed students with the aid of donuts and tap dancing.
During the first week of a new term, the trio come across a new student, Lily, looking lost and confused. Violet, Heather and Rose quickly take her under their wing and show her around campus, as well as instruct her on their task.
Despite their unique and sunny way of looking at the world, the girls are not without their problems. Violet, in particular, goes into an 'emotional tailspin', refusing to take her own advice; it's up to Heather, Rose and Lily to cheer Violet up and bring her back to her normal self.
Damsels in Distress is directed by Whit Stillman and is his first film since the release of The Last Days of Disco, which was released in 1998 and featured Kate Beckinsale.
