Nader and his wife Simin want a divorce because of their views on living abroad. While Simin thinks that moving to Europe will provide better opportunities, especially for their eleven year old daughter Termeh, Nader wants to stay in Iran and look after his father, who has Alzheimer's disease.
As Simin does not live with Nader and Termeh anymore, he hires a nurse, Razieh, to help look after his father. Razieh is four months pregnant and has taken the job without the permission of her husband, Hodjat. Although reluctant to take the job, Razieh does so because she and Hodjat desperately need the money.
After seeing Nader's father out of bed and on the floor, Razieh assumes he is dead; however, this is not the case. Angrily, Nader lashes out at her and Razieh suffers a miscarriage. When Razieh's husband finds out what's been going on, Nader is charged with murder and is soon swept up in public confrontations, and lies.
