Emma Watson Embraced The Girl Power Of Beauty And The Beast

Emma Watson

Since bursting on the scene in the Harry Potter movies and becoming one of the highest earning actors in the world, Watson has mainly starred in smaller or offbeat projects. But this is a role she felt she had to take. "It's really remarkable to play someone that I'm almost sure had an influence on the woman that I have become," Watson says. "The first time I saw Paige O'Hara sing Belle, it's the 'I Want' song of all 'I Want' songs, and I just immediately resonated with her. I was so young that I didn't even know what I was tapping into, but there was something about that spirit and energy that I just knew she was my champion."

Outspoken on women's issues, Watson says it was important for her to maintain that spirit. "Every time we would address a new scene," she says, "I just always had the original DNA of that woman in mind, and I had my fists up! I love that in our version Belle is not only awed and doesn't fit in, you see her reading and she's actually an activist within her own community."

Recycled Dresses And The 30-Wear Rule: Emma Watson Is Becoming A Stalwart Of Sustainable Fashion

Emma Watson

Emma Watson might be best known for her feminist activism in recent years, but this uniquely intelligent actress also has another cause very close to her heart; sustainable fashion. She's never been one not to make an impact with her red carpet looks, but there's a lot more going on behind the fabric than you'd guess.

Emma WatsonEmma Watson is a huge supporter of the Green Carpet Challenge

Emma's interest in eco-style first became clear at the 2016 Met Gala when she wore a frankly incredible black and white Calvin Klein piece made out of recycled plastic bottles as part of the designer's collaboration with Eco-Age for their Green Carpet Challenge. Not only is the material recycled, but the fact that each bit of the outfit was detachable meant that it could be worn differently again and again.

The Colony [Colonia] Review

Good

Based on a true story, this Chilean drama has a chilling edge to it that's difficult to shake. Strikingly well played by an international cast, the film's dark themes get under the skin. German director-cowriter Florian Gallenberger has a skilful eye that draws the audience in, focussing on characters to provide a strong emotional kick. That said, the film feels eerily stuck in the past, never quite finding present-day relevance that would make it even more powerful.

It's 1973 in Chile, as the political unrest grows surrounding Pinochet's brutal coup d'etat. Flight attendant Lena (Emma Watson) has just arrived for a four-day holiday with her journalist boyfriend Daniel (Daniel Bruhl) when street protests spin out of control. Detained by the new government, Daniel is cruelly tortured. Lena sets out to find him, following his trail to Colonia Dignidad, a religious cult out in the countryside where rebel activists are hidden from sight and forced to work. Posing as a true believer, Lena enters the compound and is quickly terrified by the ruthless, charismatic leader Paul (Michael Nyqvist) and his heartless housemaster Gisela (Richenda Carey).

Gallenberger begins building the underlying tension even in the opening scenes, which feature the happy romantic reunion between Lena and Daniel. Angry demonstrations and military action surround them, ramping up the tension. And then as the story shifts to Colonia, the film takes on nightmarish echoes of Nazi Germany, with chanted greetings ("God bless" sounds rather a lot like "Heil Hitler"), torture chambers and claustrophobic bunkers. Through all of this, Watson and Bruhl deliver remarkably grounded performances as real people caught up in unimaginable horrors. Underneath the intensity, both actors are likeable and tenacious, and together they have very strong chemistry. Meanwhile, the always superb Nyqvist (star of the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy) brings a genuinely unsettling nastiness to his all-powerful father figure.

News that she reluctantly did “what we have to start doing, unfortunately, at the expense of our creative dreams… …I walked away from a play I wanted to do because I was offered less than half of what the other man was offered and it was just the two of us.”
