Eminem and Rihanna have beaten One Direction to the number one spot on the UK singles chart.

The British boy band were set to to climb their way to the top with their new single 'Story of My Life' but the Official Charts Company has revealed the rapper's new single 'The Monster' featuring Rihanna has outdone the teenage stars' latest track.

The single was released last Tuesday (29.10.13), therefore it had a 48 hour disadvantage but still managed to over-take 1D - which includes Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik - and prevent them from scoring their fourth UK number one hit.

'The Monster' is from the American rappers eighth studio album 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2' which is released today (04.11.13).

Rihanna has now joined Elvis Presley and The Beatles in being one of only three artists to achieve seven UK number ones in seven years.

Lorde's 'Royals' was number one last week and has fallen just one place into number two. Legendary DJ Fat Boy Slim's 'Eat Sleep Rave Repeat' debuts at number 3 leaving One Direction's 'Story of My Life' at number four.

Rounding off this week's top five is One Republic with 'Counting Stars.'
