Ellen Page and her girlfriend Samantha Thomas made their red carpet debut as a couple on Sunday night, at the Toronto Film Festival premiere of Freeheld. Page came out publicly in February of last year, with an emotional speech at the Human Rights Campaign's ‘Time to Thrive’ conference, where she announced she was ‘tired of hiding’.

On the red carpet Page told E! News she was ‘in love’ with artist and surfer Thomas, who she’s been dating for several months. "Walking down the carpet holding my girlfriend's hand is pretty special…it's pretty awesome,” the 28 year old added.

In Freehold Page plays one half of a lesbian couple who battle for domestic partner rights after one of them is diagnosed with cancer. Julianne Moore stars as Page’s partner, while Steve Carell and Michael Shannon also appear in supporting roles.

After the premiere, Page’s BFF, ‘Orange Is The New Black’ actress Ruby Rose, praised the actress on Instagram writing, ‘When your best friend is the most talented, funny, beautiful, generous, humble human being it's hard to not smile until it hurts. Ellen, I am so proud of you and will always be grateful for everything you are and will always be to me. @ellenpage.’

Last May Page spoke candidly to Ellen Degeneres about her decision to come out during the 'Time to Thrive' conference. "[It was] the most nervous I've ever been in my life," Page told the talk show host.

"My biggest fear of doing it was even just having a panic attack. I was just so ready to do it and quite frankly so excited to do it. It was a combination of such thrill to finally be at a place in my life where I was able to do that,” the 28 year old added.
