Mark Hamill Jessica Alba Aaron Paul Ellen Page

Mark Hamill surprised and delighted Star Wars diehards on Thursday evening in Los Angeles, when he appeared at a live reading of The Empire Strikes Back at the Ace Hotel Theatre. Hamill joined stars including Jessica Alba, Aaron Paul and Ellen Page at the reading, which was hosted by director Jason Reitman as part of Film Independent’s Live Read series.

Forget "True Detective" Season 2, Ellen Page And Kate Mara's Parody Is Where It's At

Kate Mara Ellen Page Vince Vaughn

Ellen Page and Kate Mara are two of Hollywood’s favourite sweethearts, but we love them even more (if that’s even possible) after their True Detective parody for Funny or Die. Possibly inspired by the news from earlier this week that Vince Vaughn and Collin Farrell will be joining the HBO hit, the starlets filmed their own take on the show. It’s called Tiny Detectives and it’s exactly what it sounds like.

Ellen Page
If Ellen Page doesn't star in True Detective, HBO should definitely consider a spinoff, based on Tiny Detective.

The premise: since people were unhappy with the new True Detective cast, HBO have decided to re-cast. But with Page at 5’1’’ and Mara not exactly towering at 5’2’’, their characters have had to take a very… creative approach to detective work. For one, they can’t see the evidence half the time. Also, they sometimes have to sit on magazines to see over the dashboard of their cop car. And I won’t spoil the rest, but you won’t make it past the 1:10 mark without laughing, that’s for sure. Basically, go watch the video right now. You know, just in case you needed a reminder of why these two are awesome. Or if you have an afternoon or so, you could just dive straight into a pit of three-minute comedy videos. No judgement.

X-men: Days Of Future Past Review

Excellent

Continuing to be the most original and resonant of the Marvel superhero franchises, the X-men return in the capable hands of director Bryan Singer, who again stirs plenty of meaty subtext beneath the thrilling action. He also has one of the best casts imaginable, including Oscar winners, cinema royalty, rising stars and matinee idols.

Best of all, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) returns to the fold after two less-than-thrilling solo adventures. He's at the centre of everything here, as Professor X and Magneto (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen) ask Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) to send Wolverine's consciousness back 50 years to 1973. His mission is to prevent Dr Trask (Peter Dinklage) from inventing mutant-hunting robots, because they will go out of control and cause a present-day dystopia in which mutants and anyone who sympathises with them are killed. But Wolverine's biggest task will be to get the then-feuding Professor X and Magneto (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) to work together to keep renegade mutant Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) from making everything worse.

Thankfully, Simon Kinberg's script doesn't worry too much about the whole time-travel thing, shrugging off dubious logic by keeping the focus on the characters. And there are a lot of people to keep an eye on, which makes the film sometimes feel a bit crowded and leaves some characters barely on-screen at all (blink and you'll miss Anna Paquin's Rogue). The best newbie is Evan Peters' Quicksilver, who gets the film's most entertaining sequence as he races around tweaking an action sequence frame by frame. Other set-pieces are grippingly darker, and some don't quite make sense (why does Magneto feel the need to levitate an entire stadium?).

Touchy Feely Review

Good

After a couple of gimmicky transgressive comedies (Humpday and Your Sister's Sister), writer-director Lynn Shelton takes a more observant approach this time. So even if, as before, the script never quite fills in the gaps in the story, it at least knowingly recreates relational awkwardness in a remarkably sensitive way. And the characters are almost eerily easy to identify with.

The centre of the story is Abby (Rosemarie DeWitt), who is debating whether she should move in with her rebound boyfriend (Scoot McNairy). This sparks her to think about her whole life, and she ends up recoiling at the idea of touching human flesh. Which is a problem since she's a massage therapist. By contrast, her dentist brother Paul (Josh Pais) believes he might have the ability to heal his patients, so he consults Abby's reiki-practitioner colleague (Alison Janney) for advice. Meanwhile, Paul's daughter Jenny (Ellen Page) is terrified to tell her father that she hates working as his assistant. And she's even more afraid to admit that she has a crush on her aunt's boyfriend.

Along the way, Abby, Paul and Jenny are all pushed into a turning point in their lives by an unexpected change in circumstances, which of course feels a bit contrived. But the film's real strength is in the messy connection between family members who have issues with themselves and each other, all of which are expressed through clumsy conversations and uncomfortable physicality. As insecure siblings, DeWitt and Pais are terrific in complex roles that draw on the actors' nervous energy. But only Pais and McNairy are genuinely likeable: men who haven't a clue what to do. By contrast, the always terrific Page and Janney have much less-developed roles.

Jane Lynch To Ellen Page: "Don't Be So Hard On Yourself."

Ellen Page Jane Lynch

Celebrities have rushed to congratulate Ellen Page on her coming out announcement from Friday. That includes Glee actress, famed comedienne and LGBT+ advocate Jane Lynch, who had some additional words of wisdom for Page. Lynch, who has been out for the entirety of her career, had this to say to the 26-year-old (half Lynch’s age) actress (via People): "When I was younger, I lied by omission. She should give herself a break and not call it 'lying'. "

This refers to Page’s touching speech at HRC’s Time To Thrive conference on Friday, where the younger actress declared: “I’m tired of hiding and tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered. And I'm standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain.”

Ellen Page, The East Los Angeles Premiere
Page teared up during her speech, but she remained composed and well-spoken throughout.

"And I am young, yes, but what I have learned is that love, the beauty of it, the joy of it, and yes, even the pain of it is the most incredible gift to give and to receive as a human being,” the 26-year-old actress said through tears. “And we deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame and without compromise. There are too many kids out there suffering from bullying, rejection or simply being mistreated because of who they are."
