Elijah Wood fears technology will lead to the downfall of humanity.

The 28-year-old actor - who has lent his voice to new animation '9', which tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world destroyed by machines - believes modern equipment could ruin the planet.

He said: "The movie definitely makes you start thinking about where we are going. All we have to do is look at how ingrained we are into technology that continues to evolve at a faster rate than we can imagine. I remember a time when we didn't have cell phones and now they have computing power greater than probably the first laptop I owned.

"It's Madness. If it gets out of control and if it's used for the wrong reasons or if it takes us away from our own humanity, then maybe that will be our downfall."

Although Elijah has his misgivings about modern technology, he admits he can't bear to be parted from his cell phone.

He explained to Parade.com: "I'm a gadget guy for sure, but I think there is a time and place for everything. People are talking on them constantly at restaurants and movie theatres, which I think is really inappropriate. So I try to keep my gadgets to the right time and place. But I have a cell phone and I have a Blackberry.

"I've had an iPod since the beginning and that got me into being a DJ at parties and clubs."
