It was much less offensive than going out in black face that is for sure
When Dancing With the Stars professional Julianne Hough went out for Halloween, her plan was to honour one of her favourite television characters; Crazy Eyes from the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black. What she didn't intend on doing was causing a minor uproar and potentially offend some sensitive souls who were genuinely shocked to see the professional dancer dressed in black face. When it was time for her brother, Derek Hough, to go out for Halloween, you can bet that he kept it generic and inoffensive.
Derek Hough, offending original punks since 2013
Derek dressed up for the Casamigos Tequila Halloween Party in Los Angeles, the same event where Julianne went dressed up as Crazy Eyes (who is played by Uzo Aduba in the show), in much less offensive attire and may have had something to say while he was there. If he didn't address the poor costume choice on the night, then at least he did his best to stick up for his kid sister in the aftermath of the fallout from the costume controversy.
"She's my little baby sister and she's the sweetest thing ever," Derek confessed to E! News backstage at Monday (28 October) night's edition of DWTS.
"She is just beyond beside herself. She's so apologetic. She's so so sorry.” He went on, saying how the black face obviously "wasn't her brightest moment in her life," but he is hopefully that we can all move on from the unfortunate incident. He continued, "Obviously, it wasn't her brightest moment in her life, but hopefully we can move on."
Julianne addressed the costume herself in a tweet posted on Saturday, 26 October, explaining that she didn't mean to cause any offense and that she is genuinely for offending anyone. She wrote, "I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New Black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created,” she wrote. “It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."
At least it was more original than going out as Miley Cyrus
"I knew I should have come as Al Jolson"
