And the winner of most powerful speech at the SAG Awards goes to...
This year's Screen Actors Guild Awards was full of impassioned speeches about being united as human beings from a number of winners, but none were more fierce and rabble-rousing than that of 'Stranger Things' star David Harbour, who executed the greatest speech of the night.
David Harbour just won the SAG Awards
After winning the 2017 SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, the cast and crew took to the stage to accept their gong. There Daivd Harbour, who plays cop Jim Hopper in the sci-fi adventure series boomed across the room a speech worthy of a world leader.
'I would just like to say that in light of all that's going on in the world today, it's difficult to celebrate the already celebrated "Stranger Things," but this award from you, who take your craft seriously and earnestly believe, like me, that great acting can change the world, is a call to arms from our fellow craftsmen and women to go deeper and through our art to battle against fear, self-centeredness and exclusivity of our predominantly narcissistic culture', he opened to a cheering audience. 'And through our craft to cultivate a more empathetic and understanding society by revealing intimate truths that serve as a forceful reminder to folks that when they feel broken and afraid and tired, they are not alone.'
There was a certain comedic quality to the way he delivered the words, made all the more amusing by the series of hilarious faces that co-star Winona Ryder pulled all the way through his speech. But through his shaking hand and very real words about humanity and the importance of showing unity, the audience were hooked.
'Now, as we act and the continuing narrative of "Stranger Things," we 1983 Midwesterners will repel bullies', he continued. 'We will shelter freaks and outcasts, those who have no homes. We will get past the lies. We will hunt monsters. And when we are lost amidst the hypocrisy and the casual violence of certain individuals and institutions, we will, as per Chief Jim Hopper, punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy the meek and the disenfranchised and the marginalized. And we will do it all with soul, with heart, and with joy.'
More: Mahershala Ali speaks about persecution in his SAG Awards speech
While there were other incredible speeches at the 23rd annual SAG Awards - Mahershala Ali spoke about the love between himself and his Christian mother despite his Muslim faith, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus directly addresses the so-called 'immigrant ban' newly propsed by President Donald Trump - none stirred the crowd quite as much as Harbour.
