The star was just two songs into the show when he jumped down from the stage and landed awkwardly on the ground, right in front of concerned fans.

He continued singing, but as soon as the track was over, the singer admitted he was in urgent need of medical attention and apologised to audience members as he took an extended break.

He told the crowd, "I think I just broke my leg... I think I really broke my leg. So you have my promise, right now, that the Foo Fighters, we're gonna come back and finish the show. But right now... I'm gonna go to the hospital, I'm gonna fix my leg, but then I'm gonna come back, and we're gonna play for you again. I'm so sorry."

His bandmates filled the unexpected break by performing a series of covers with drummer Taylor Hawkins taking over vocals.

Grohl returned in a wheelchair less than an hour later with his leg in a cast.

The rocker took a seat in the middle of the stage and finished the gig, proclaiming, "I may not be able to walk or run but I can still play guitar and scream."

The exact nature of Grohl's injury has yet to be revealed and it is unknown if the incident will affect the band's ongoing Sonic Highways World Tour. The Foo Fighters are next due to perform in Landgraaf, the Netherlands on Sunday (14Jun15).
