Rick Huxley Dies, 72, Dave Clark Five Drummer Suffered With Emphysema
Rick Huxley dies, aged 72. The bass player for the popular 60s beat combo The Dave Clark Five, has died, at the age of 72, the Daily Mail has reported. He passed away yesterday (February 12, 2013) and the band’s leader, Dave Clark paid tribute to his former band-mate, saying that the news was “devastating.”
Huxley, originally from Dartford in Kent, joined the band in 1958 and played on hits such as ‘Glad All Over’ and ‘Bits and Pieces.’ The Dave Clark Five were at the forefront of the invasion of British pop bands that dominated the US charts in the 1960s, the invasion that was, of course, dominated by The Beatles. They popularity in the States led to the band appearing on the hugely popular and influential Ed Sullivan Show In 1964, they landed a UK number one hit with ‘Glad All Over,’ knocking The Beatles’ ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ off the top spot. ‘Bits and Pieces’ and ‘Everybody Knows’ were both number two hits for the band.
With Huxley passed away, two original members of the band survive: Dave Clark and the guitarist Lenny Davidson. Rick Huxley remained a member of the band until they split in 1970.
