Soul Veteran Darlene Love Has Reworked Ike & Tina Turner's River Deep - Mountain High Anthem For Her New Album, Insisting Her Former Boss Phil Spector Did A Terrible Job Drowning Out The Vocals In The Original.
Bruce Springsteen's sidekick Steven Van Zandt took over production duties on new album Introducing Darlene Love and agreed the classic Spector track was in need of a revamp.
Love tells Rolling Stone magazine, "That was supposed to be Phil Spector's masterpiece, but he buried everything, and you can't really hear Tina. Steve wanted to make a new version of it."
It's the only cover on the album, which features new songs donated by Love fans Elvis Costello and Springsteen.
The singer admits working with Van Zandt was a lot more pleasant than the time she spent in the studio with Spector, who is currently behind bars after being found responsible for the death of actress Lana Clarkson.
Love explains, "When you went into the studio with Phil , he was like, 'This is what you're gonna do, and I don't want to hear nothing else about it.'
"Steve wants me to be part of the process. Also, he ain't crazy."
