The British band were announced as the first headliners for this year’s festival earlier this week.
A petition has been launched on change.org in reaction to Coldplay’s headlining slot at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. But the British rock band need not worry about it yet, as the petition is actually a joke, meant to highlight the ridiculousness of the one started last year when Kanye West was announced as headlining the festival.
Do you want Coldplay to headline Glastonbury?
The petition, started by Felicity Martin, is titled ‘Cancel Coldplay's headline slot and get a rock band’. ‘Coldplay are an insult to music fans all over the world,’ the description reads. ‘We spend hundreds of pounds to attend glasto, and by doing so, expect a certain level of entertainment. Lets prevent this musical injustice now!’

Coldplay and Beyonce have drawn accusations of cultural insensitivity and exploitation after they released the video for their new single, ‘Hymn For the Weekend’, which was filmed in a district of Mumbai.
The latest single from A Head Full of Dreams racked up over 21 million hits in the first four days after the video dropped, and it’s going to get much wider exposure when Beyonce joins Coldplay in performing the song at the Super Bowl 50 halftime show on February 7th.

Coldplay were once turned down by David Bowie.
"Chris [Martin] once submitted a song to him with a note that said, 'Would you please sing on this song, because it's got this three-part thing,' and we had a sort of David Bowie–type character," drummer Will Champion told the NME.

Coldplay's ‘A Head Full Of Dreams’ wasn't enough to beat Adele’s ’25’.
Coldplay have failed to knock Adele off the top spot in the UK album chart, giving 25 its third week at number one. A Head Full Of Dreams is Coldplay’s seventh studio album, but is the band’s first not to debut in the top spot.
Adele’s 25 is still on top of the UK album chart.
25 managed to shift another 354,000 copies over the last seven days, giving Adele the highest third week sales for a chart-topping album since Take That’s The Circus, which sold 382,000 copies for its third week at number one in 2008.

Rihanna, Katy Perry and Coldplay are the three contenders for the coveted show
The National Football League has taken the unprecedented step of asking potential performers at the Super Bowl Half Time show to ‘pay to play’. Traditionally, the NFL doesn’t pay those it selects for the highly desired spot. But this year, it has asked those artists on the shortlist – believed to be Rihanna, Katy Perry and Coldplay – if they would be willing to donate a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the NFL, or some other type of financial contribution.

The Coldplay star has emerged from tough times to play an intimate London gig.
Chris Martin is a man saved; by music, that is. The Coldplay musician has endured a tough year plastered over the tabloids with his recently divorced ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, propelled by the unforgivably grating 2014 buzzphrase, "conscious uncoupling."
In the midst of the gossip and gloom, Martin and his Coldplay bandmates released Ghost Stories, a melancholy album of electronica dabblings suffused with the inevitable emotional turmoil of a relationship breakdown. The British quartet brought their latest chart-topping record and a selection of other hits to London's Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday night for a stripped-back and intimate performance.
Inviting fans at the sold-out show to be as close as workably possible, Coldplay managed to make the gig feel a tenth of the size; an illusion helped by the seeming absence high vis-clad concert wardens, a photo pit or heavy onstage theatrics. Instead, the band placed an emphasis on the stripped back aesthetic to give a reassuring "calm after the storm" vibe.
Wow-ee.the pop newcomer shows some serious clout in the charts.
Sam Smith must feel on top of the world after his album, In The Lonely Hour, not only struck number one in the UK charts yesterday but was also revealed to be the year's fastest-selling debut of 2014 so far.
In The Lonely Hour has sold an impressive 101,000 copies over the last seven days and has managed to throw the alt rock titans Coldplay and their album Ghost Stories from the number one position. The news comes the week after Smith scored a number one single with his track 'Stay With Me.'
In The Lonely Hour may be the fastest-selling debut but it is also admirably the year's third quickest seller behind Ghost Stories and Paolo Nutini's Caustic Love.

Coldplay's 'Ghost Stories' debuted with the highest first week sales of 2014. Did not having the album available on Spotify play a role in its sales?
For a band that has been around for as long as Coldplay, you’d figure at some point they would be showing some signs of slowing down. After the first 18 years of my life, I can hardly walk up the stairs without losing my breath. However, the British rock quartet continues to find new ways to live healthy and reinvent themselves, and their new album, Ghost Stories, is no different: the band’s sixth full length debuted at number one on the Billboard charts this week with the biggest first week sales numbers so far in 2014.
Album sales may be down 15 percent versus the same week at this point in 2013, but that didn’t stop Coldplay for notching their fourth straight number one record. Oddly enough, Ghost Stories is actually the lowest first week out of all their number ones. It landed with 383 thousand sold, while 2011’s Mylo Xyloto moved 447 thousand, 2008’s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends had 720 thousand, and 2005’s X&Y peaked at 737 thousand. Clearly, the industry ain’t doing too hot when the number ones are getting lower with each top debut, but Coldplay is still one of the biggest bands in the world. In fact, their trip to number one with Ghost Stories might just be the most impressive yet.

Emeli Sande is among the nominees for two prizes at the Ivor Novello awards in May.
Emeli Sande may be adding to her growing list of accolades as she is newly nominated for two different awards at the 58th Ivor Novello awards.
Her UK number 2 hit 'Next To Me' is nominated for Best Song Musically and Lyrically as well as the Most Performed Work award. Competing in the former category is 'Laura' by Bat For Lashes and 'Two Fingers' by Jake Bugg while the latter category also sees nominations from Olly Murs' 'Dance With Me Tonight' and Coldplay's Paradise. Sande has previously received two Urban Music Awards, three BRIT, three MOBO awards and an ECHO Music Award among several others and she's definitely up for a chance in the Ivor Novellos as her nominated track was apparently the third most listened to track of 2012 - a pretty impressive achievement in itself, though not as impressive as the reception her number one debut album 'Our Version of Events' received!
Other artists nominated in two separate categories are Plan B with 'Ill Manors', which is up for Best Contemporary Song and Best Original Film Score, and Alt-J with 'Fitzpleasure' for Best Contemporary Song and 'An Awesome Wave' for Best Album. The awards ceremony will make its way to the Grosvenor House hotel in London later this Spring on May 16th 2013.
Coldplay's third album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, has been named the nation's favourite in a poll compiled by Radio 2 listeners.
Coldplay's second album, A Rush Of Blood To The Head, has been named the nation's favourite in a list compiled by the listeners of BBC Radio 2. The 2002 release was named the top album by DJ Jo Whiley, on air today (April 1) as part of the BBC's 'The Golden Age of the Album' series.
Coldplay's second album was celebrated by the BBC in poll announced today
After the first spot, the rest of the list continues to surprise as Keane's Hopes and Fears was named second on the list and Duran Duran's Rio at three. Usual 'best album list' compatriots Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles and Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd made it on to the list too, but peaked at 8th (Sgt. Pepper) and 4th (DSotM). The crowning of Coldplay's album as the nations favourite marks a successful couple of BBC lists for the group, after a Radio 6 poll recently named the song 'Clocks', taken from A Rush of Blood to the Head, the top track on it's list of 100 greatest songs of the last century.
When it comes to the live tour, it’s the veteran artists of the music scene that are still leading the way on ticket sales. Billboard revealed the highest grossing tours of 2012 recently and it was perhaps no surprise that the ageing Queen of Pop Madonna came out top of the list – the 53 year-old seems to have been on tour constantly this year.
Reuters reports that the music chart and stat compiler had her earning an estimated $228.4 million from her 80 plus shows performed during the year. She’s not quite done yet either, with a couple more shows in South America due this week. She’ll be delighted to have beaten her rival Lady Gaga, who is in sixth spot with takings of $124.9 million from her Born This Way Tour; it’s worth pointing out though that Gaga is only midway through the jaunt at the moment, and won’t wrap up touring until finishing in the US in March 2013.
The rest of the top five is full of well-established names; Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were second with $199 million from 72 shows, whilst Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters was third with $186 million. Cirque De Soleil made an appearance in fourth with their homage to Michael Jackson taking $147.3 million from 183 shows, whilst Coldplay were fifth with $147.2 million from 67 shows. The list was compiled from estimated gross ticket sales.

"I've been writing songs and I'm so fired up about the band's future." Chris said, "I'm fortunate to do what I do and no way do I want to stop. This three-year break idea only came about because I said at a gig in Australia that we might not be back there for three years. That's probably true, but that's just how a world tour works. No chance are we taking a three-year break."
Having been going strong and almost non-stop since 1996 now, what keeps them fired up and making music? Well, according to Martin, it's charity that keeps them motivated and inspired. "If we don't work hard we make less money to give [children's charity] Kids Company. We're very spoiled and that's a constant motivator to keep going. Our work with the charity is ongoing. We just tried to buy a building for them near our studio in London, but got gazumped... It was probably Radiohead that outbid us."

Jay Z and Coldplay have announced that they'll be performing on the same stage come December 31st of this year in Brooklyn's Barclays Centre in New York, it was announced on Jay-Z's website Life and Times, yesterday.
Where are you going to be spending your NYE 2012/13? If you're not going to be at the Barclay's Centre in Brooklyn, NY then you know you're not having the best night possible as that's where Jay Z and Coldplay will be performing. While Jay's website dramatically sported a poster with the two act's names, plus the date and place, Coldplay's website was a touch more 'polite', issuing a statement with more information about the upcoming gig. "This will be the second time in two years that Coldplay has celebrated new year with long-term friend and collaborator JAY Z, the band having shared the bill with him at a Las Vegas concert in 2010. More recently, JAY Z performed onstage with Coldplay at the spectacular London 2012 Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony," they said.
Almost unbelievably, "The two Brooklyn dates also mark the first Coldplay shows that have been put on sale in NYC since September 2005." Coldplay will also be playing two other shows before the NYE blowout, another at the Barclay centre on the 30th, and a futher date at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT on the 29th. Both of these earlier dates will be supported by Naturally 7 and will not feature Jay-Z. Tickets will be going on sale this Friday (16th Nov. 2012).
It remains one of the odder friendships in the mainstream music sphere, yet Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Jay Z are still evidently as tight as ever – so much so that they’re going to be spending New Year’s Eve together. This isn’t just going to be a small gathering with Gwyneth Paltrow and Beyonce, a few plates full of left over mince pies and a crowd around the television to watch a tipsy Jools Holland try not to fall over whilst presenting his annual Hootenany, though; it’s been announced that Coldplay will be joining Hova for a show at the Barclay’s Center in New York – the first time the Brits have played the city for several years.
It’s not the first time the two acts have collaborated on New Year’s Ever: back in 2010 they both played live at a concert in Las Vegas. Their most recent live coming together meanwhile was earlier this year when they both played at the 2012 Paralympic Games closing ceremony in London.
Coldplay will also be playing a show at the Barclays Center the night before, on December 30, though these will not be with Jay Z according to the New York Times. The pair of dates will mark the first time the band have played the area since 2005.
Girls Aloud are set to reunite for a tour next year following the upcoming release of their comeback/10 year anniversary album 'Ten'.
The girl band have been on a three year long hiatus since 2009, with their last performance taking place on September 18th 2009 at Wembley Stadium where they were supporting Coldplay on their tour. Since then, Cheryl Cole, Nicola Roberts and Nadine Coyle all set out on solo careers with the former being significantly the most successful with two consecutive number one albums and one close behind at number two. The band are set to release their greatest hits album, 'Ten', in celebration of 10 years since they were first put together on TV talent show 'Popstars: The Rivals', going on to top the charts with their first single 'Sound of the Underground'. The album will include their brand new single 'Something New' which is due on November 18th following their first performance of the song on the BBC's 'Children in Need' program on the 16th. Cole, Roberts and Coyle have all expressed excitement at the comeback. 'We're really excited. It feels like nothing has changed', Cole told BBC News, while Roberts thought 'It was meant to be' and Coyle described the reunion as 'like a comfort blanket'.
Their 12 date tour will commence in Newcastle on February 21st after 'Ten's release on November 26th.
Mumford and Son’s second album, Babel is the fastest selling album of the year, in the UK and the US. A report from The Guardian today reveals that Babel sold 159,000 copies in its first week on sale in the UK and landed itself at the top of the UK albums chart in the process. In the US, they sold a staggering 600,000 copies and also topped the Billboard album chart in the States as well.
As if that wasn't enough success for Mumford And Sons to achieve in one week, the band have also beaten Spotify’s record for the number of streams from an album in a single week. Spotify users reportedly streamed “around eight million listens” from the record in its first week of release, beating the previous record by ‘a factor of three.’ Spotify’s chief content officer, Ken Parks told Billboard that one in every 10 Spotify users in the United States streamed a track from Babel last week. These results have somewhat quashed the popular theory that streaming services have a detrimental effect on CD sales.
Some major bands, such as Coldplay, have withheld their album releases from Spotify during the first week of release, fearing that it will impact negatively on people purchasing the album. Daniel Glass of the Mumford and Sons’ US label Glassnote commented “Spotify is a huge form of exposure, and they're not stealing…It's retraining people to buy music through streaming services. Could we be getting better compensation? Yes, but I'm not going to hold it back from them. That's old thinking.”
Swedish House Mafia have unveiled the dates for their farewell tour, Billboard have reported today (September 24, 2012). The three-piece announced earlier this year that they would be calling it a day but have decided to give fans one last chance to rejoice in the live experience and have called their worldwide adventure Swedish House Mafia: One Last Tour. The 26-date tour kicks off on November 16, 2012 in Dubai and continues on to India, Europe, South Africa and North America. The world tour will end on March 9, 2013 in Los Angeles.
Before they embark on their farewell tour, the band will release a compilation album on October 22, entitled Until Now. The first single from the album, Don’t You Worry, Child,’ was debuted last week. A deluxe version of the album will be available, which will feature remixes of Coldplay and Usher. In an announcement on their website, the band sent a message to their fans, saying “Today we want to share with you that the tour we are about to go on will be our last," the message read. "We want to thank every single one of you who came on this journey. We came, we raved, we loved.” Many have been bemused by the band’s decision to quit at such a high point in their career. Their headline set at Coachella 2012 is considered one of the best sets that they have played since they formed in 2008.
The band will be hoping that the concerts pass without trouble. Nine people were allegedly stabbed at their Phoenix Park concert in Dublin in July and three people were stabbed at a show in Milton Keynes later that month.
Universal won clearance Friday to take over EMI, but with a few provisos to the deal, reports the Associated Foreign Press.
European Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said Universal Music agreed to part company with some of the biggest-selling acts in the business including Coldplay, Pink Floyd, David Bowie and Cliff Richard, to get the deal approved, but perhaps the biggest loss will be French house music producer and DJ David Guetta. They will now acquire the talents of The Beatles, who EMI claim have all-time sales at more than a billion records and huge online revenues continuing. They also benefit from Katy Perry and Robbie Williams "to icons like The Beatles, the Beach Boys, Genesis and Bob Seger," owner French group Vivendi said in a statement. The deal "will benefit the artistic community and music industry," it added.
The decision to merge the two musical superpowers wasn’t without it’s complications, with some bodies concerned that it would create too much power over the terms it sets for digital platforms such as Spotify and Apple's iTunes that distribute music direct to consumers. “Competition in the music business is crucial to preserve choice, cultural diversity and innovation," Almunia said in a statement earlier. "In this investigation, we have paid close attention to digital innovation, which is changing the way that people listen to music." Basically, it’s worth loads and loads of money.
Rihanna has received 6 nominations for the MTV Europe Music Awards; more than any other act, reports The Telegraph. Muse, Coldplay and One Direction also pick up nominations.
The 24-year Barbadian star has been shortlisted for the awards for best song, best video, best female, best pop, biggest fans, and best look. Both ‘best song’ and ‘best video’ were for the same song, ‘We Found Love’ and ‘best look’ is a brand new category. She is up against Taylor Swift in the female, pop and look sections, whilst Swift was also nominated for best live and best world stage act. Other acts to be recognised, or at least they hope so, are Lana Del Rey, Nicki Minaj, Jay Z and Kanye West, all of which garnered three nominations each. Lady GaGa dominated last year's awards - held in Belfast - coming away with four awards and performing ‘Marry the Night’. This year she is also nominated for three categories.
Given the name of the awards, one would be forgiven for thinking that European acts are the most prominent, but it’s the Americans that continue to dominate year after year, and despite being held in Germany this year, that trend is set to continue. Great Britain represents the biggest European contingent with Muse Coldplay, Rita Ora, One Direction, Florence and the Machine, and M.I.A all hopeful to take home an award come November 11, 2012.
Over a decade since the release of their debut studio album, Parachutes, Coldplay are undoubtedly one of the biggest bands in the world. When you reach the level that Coldplay have powered up to, there's huge interest in everything that you do; the rumour mill works overtime, the pressure to continue to deliver is immense and there's massive anticipation surrounding everything that you release. So, if you are going to churn out an album, you pretty much have to make certain it's a damn good one. After a nigh on three year wait for its completion, Mylo Xyloto has finally landed complete with whiffs of the past, leaps to the future and even a perhaps unlikely collaboration with Rihanna; it is to be hoped that it's a grower.
Definitely not lacking in ambition, Mylo Xlyoto opens with its title track; not so much a track but more 43 seconds of atmospheric guitars punctuated by twinkling glockenspiel in the vein of a pre-gig instrumental introduction of sorts. The track build to launch into 'Hurts Like Heaven', a confident, fast paced, up tempo track with driving drums powering the usual Coldplay mix of lead guitar melodies lilting over a blend of rhythm guitar and bass, with Chris Martin's vocals in from the off; then, with their most recent pre-album single, 'Paradise', Coldplay step outside of their comfort zone and into and electro-flavoured new territory. 'Paradise' opens with a minute long string-laden introduction, but when the beat eventually kicks in, it really does kick in with an almost dub step swagger; the track has much more of a commercial leaning to it than anything by Coldplay that has preceded and almost verges on club territory with its swaggering chorus. Coming out of the chorus, 'Paradise' is again characterised by a catchy 'ooh' hook reminiscent of 'Viva La Vida', before the track plays into a much calmer piano and vocal intro.

With Chris Martin now dating Gwyneth Paltrow, he decided that Coldplay could no longer perform his ballad to a former love.
Coldplay will not be playing their live favourite, 'Green Eyes', as frontman Chris Martin wrote it about a previous love and now it offends his current girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow. Martin and Paltrow have been dating since 2002, so now the track about a former girlfriend has been replaced with the newer song 'Moses', which Martin has written specially for his 'Se7en' star girlfriend.
While giving a concert in Australia on Wednesday 16th July 2003, and had to explain to the 150 people attending all about his decision to drop 'Green Eyes' from their live set list. He discussed the decision, by saying that: "It's not about the right person. It's like an old pair of trousers, it doesn't fit."
