Clint Eastwood

Following the monumental success of American Sniper, Clint Eastwood has signalled his intention to tackle another real-life hero story in the form of Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger. Eastwood, now 85, will make the movie for Warner Bros and is set to start shooting in the fall.

Sullenberg, a veteran pilot, executed an emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River in 2009 after the aircraft was disabled by striking a flock of geese during its initial climb out of LaGuardia Airport. Sullenberg saved everyone on-board and became an international speaker on airline safety.

The Academy Awards voting process gets more depressing the more we learn about it. It's becoming more apparent that some of the people given the opportunity to have a say in the Oscars race don't really care about movies that much.

American Sniper Is Popular, But Is It Misleading?

Bradley Cooper Clint Eastwood

Over the past few weeks, American Sniper has been touted as an example of quality military action, one of Clint Eastwood’s best, and even received several award nods. However, the film has also ignited plenty of controversy over its depictions of a soldier’s return home. Ostensibly, American Sniper is a character study of a tortured soldier.

Bradley Cooper portrays Chris Kyle in American Sniper.

The movie’s detractors point out Chris Kyle’s apparent lack of trauma – both in real-life and his onscreen portrayal. Intentionally or not, Kyle has painted himself as a remorseless sniper who said his job was “fun” and wished he could return to Iraq to fight even more, and who made millions of dollars and gained worldwide fame writing about his exploits.

Bradley Cooper Clint Eastwood Sienna Miller

Ever since Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper stormed the US box office the film has been the subject of many debates. But amidst the controversy over the film’s depiction of Chris Kyle, the Navy SEAL with the most kills in U.S. history, another debate has risen online among moviegoers. Just what is going on with that fake baby?

To give some context for those who have not yet seen the film, in one scene Sienna Miller hands Bradley Cooper what must be the most plastic looking baby in recent cinematic history. Cooper then holds and pats the baby for just over one minute and even manages to make the doll’s hand move.

Is American Sniper's Chris Kyle Really A Coward?

Bradley Cooper Clint Eastwood Michael Moore

American Sniper may be on-course to be the biggest grossing war movie of all time, and it may have scored surprise Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Actor, but should we really go along with the whole hero narrative? Not according to documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, who has described snipers as "cowards".

Chris Kyle, played by Bradley Cooper, is credited as the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history. He was killed at a Texas shooting range by a former soldier after returning from Iraq in 2013, though his Hollywood story was already in the works. The movie has already set box-office records for a January movie and pulled in an estimated $105 million for the long holiday weekend.

Unsurprising, given the six Oscar nods the Bradley Cooper starrer scooped up this week, including Cooper’s third Best Actor nod in as many years.  It earned six Oscar nominations on Thursday, including Best Picture and a Best Actor nod for Bradley Cooper. American Sniper Review

Excellent

Once again, director Clint Eastwood lurks in the background, springing a stunningly atmospheric thriller on audiences when they least expect it. Honestly, for an 84-year-old Eastwood is an astoundingly nimble filmmaker, able to take an audience right into a tense situation while never cheating with flashy movie trickery. This film grabs us without mercy, pulling us into a morally complex situation that gets our head spinning.

It's the true story of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), the Navy Seal sniper credited with the most official kills after serving four tours of duty in Iraq. Based on his memoir, the film traces him from his religious upbringing, during which he's taught about guns and encroaching evil from an early age. So after the 9/11 attacks, he enlists in the Navy. His sharp-shooting skills are quickly apparent. And as he prepares for his first assignment abroad, he romances local girl Taya (Sienna Miller), a feisty woman who knows what she's getting into. Chris, on the other hand, is instantly thrown into a quandary when his first targets as a sniper are a woman and child who seem to be carrying a bomb. Over the next few years, his marriage to Taya and his moral centre are tested by his military service. And when an Iraqi sniper challenges him, he takes it personally.

Jason Hall's script sticks close to Chris' perspective, which is intensified by Eastwood's coolly efficient direction and Cooper's beefy performance. By putting the audience so tightly within Chris' point of view, we are unable to escape the psychological impact of his experiences, even if real warfare is no doubt much more horrific even than what's depicted here. Cleverly, the film never asks us to judge Chris, merely to see how battle changes him. And Cooper is terrific at finding tiny details that reveal both Chris' altered state and the core stability that never leaves him.

Clint Eastwood On Crucial Research For 'American Sniper'

Clint Eastwood Bradley Cooper

Production for 'American Sniper' began back in May, 2012, after Warner Brothers acquired the rights to Chris Kyle's autobiography of the same name. On 2nd February, 2013, Kyle was shot dead at a shooting range in Texas by a fellow ex-marine, suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. That sort of devastating twist in the tale was enough to cause director Steven Spielberg to leave the project, yet it wasn't enough to keep Clint Eastwood from stepping in and bringing the hero's story to the big screen.

"The studio called and asked if I would be interested in being involved with this picture," explained Eastwood, "and ironically I was reading his book. In fact I was down to about the last 30 pages." Eastwood officially joined the project as a director on 21st August 2013. After receiving the offer, he sat down and finished the book, calling back the following day to accept the job.

'American Sniper' Is A Late Arrival To The Oscars Party

Bradley Cooper Clint Eastwood

The heart-pounding teaser trailer for American Sniper had so much promise that perhaps a current "fresh" score of 74% for Clint Eastwood's movie seems underwhelming. That figure will probably climb in the coming days leaving the tense drama starring Bradley Cooper with a one way ticket to the Oscars.

Bradley CooperBradley Cooper stars as sniper Chris Kyle in American Sniper

It tells the story of Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history who is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. However, in pinpoint accuracy and incredible kill record puts a price on his head, making his the prime target for insurgents.
