Chuck Berry is set to release his posthumous album 'Chuck' in June.
A new single from Chuck Berry's forthcoming posthumous album 'Chuck' was unveiled this week entitled 'Big Boys'. It comes just three days after the rock 'n' roll pioneer was found dead of natural causes at the age of 90, as part of his final musical legacy.
'Chuck' is scheduled for release this summer
The first of 10 songs was released yesterday (March 21st 2017) featuring Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Denver soul artist Nathaniel Rateliff. Historian Douglas Brinkley called the song 'a guitar player's national anthem' in the album's linear notes.
'Working to prepare the release of this record in recent months and in fact over the last several years brought him a great sense of joy and satisfaction', his family said in a statement on Facebook. 'While our hearts are very heavy at this time, we know that he had no greater wish than to see this album released to the world, and we know of no better way to celebrate and remember his 90 years of life than through his music.'
'Big Boys' is from Chuck Berry's first album in over 35 years, following 1979's 'Rock It'. Other contributors to the record include Gary Clark Jr. and Chuck's grandson Charles Berry III. Dedicated to his wife Themetta 'Toddy' Berry, 'Chuck' features their children Charles Berry Jr. and Ingrid Berry in the band, alongside Chuck's long-time bassist Jimmy Marsala and others.
Chuck Berry was touring live until 2014
'Working on my Dad's record has been one of the best experiences of my life', said Charles Berry Jr. 'I will forever treasure the musical conversations we had, and the time we spent together completing it.'
The songs have been in the making since the 80s, and he worked on it all the way up until 2014 after which his health prevented him from doing any more than oversee the production. The 10-track album also includes a sequel to 'Johnny B. Goode' entitled 'Lady B. Goode', as well as a duet with Chuck's daughter on 'Darlin''.
'Chuck' is set to be released on June 16th 2017 through Dualtone and Decca Records.
