Bad Santa 2 Review

Weak

The 2003 comedy Bad Santa is a holiday classic that skilfully mixes gross-out humour with resolutely unsentimental emotion. So it's very disappointing that this 13-years-later sequel reassembles the cast then merely coasts on the vulgarity, never bothering to develop the characters or plot. It's just as rude, and it provides some solid laughs along the way, but the story never engages the audience, which leaves the movie feeling naughty but never nice.

Over these years, Willie (Billy Bob Thornton) has continued his slacker lifestyle into his early 60s. He still lives in Phoenix, and has continued to try to ignore the attentions of the sweetly naive Thurman (Brett Kelly), who has just turned 21. Then Willie's treacherous ex-cohort Marcus (Tony Cox) gets out of prison and approaches him with a big heist. Against his better judgement, Willie accompanies him to Chicago, where two nasty surprises await: the plan is to steal millions from a children's charity, and Willie's estranged mother Sunny (Kathy Bates) is organising the robbery. Annoyed, Willie instantly falls for the sexy Diane (Christina Hendricks), who is married to the charity's shifty boss (Ryan Hansen). Meanwhile, Marcus tries to seduce a security guard (Jenny Zigrino). And Thurman turns up unannounced.

It's depressing that, after years of talk about a sequel, this haphazard plot is the best the writers could come up with. Every element of the narrative is deeply contrived to merely string together a series of filthy jokes, rude insults, noisy sex and criminal slapstick. All of this would have been welcome if the comedy sprang from the messy relationships or personalities. But everything is so static and pointless that there's nothing to hold the audience's attention, aside from a number of witty gags that pop up out of nowhere. So at least there are a few solid laughs.

Bad Santa 2 Trailer

Since we last met Willie T. Stokes, his life has had plenty of ups and downs; but mainly downs. He's still in touch with his curly haired friend, Thurman but he's the only person he really has in his life. Thurman is now fully grown and at the age of 21, he's now old enough to drink and he works at a sub sandwich shop.

Thurman is just as naive as the last time we saw him but he has just as much faith in his buddy Willie as he ever has done. Willie can't help but still feel protective over the boy he helped save from bullies all those years prior.

As for Willie's old partner Marcus, as far as Willie's concerned hopefully he's still rotting in jail after attempting to kill Willie. When Marcus gets in contact with our cranky aging ex-Santa, he's surprised to hear from him and even more surprised to learn of a new con Marcus tells him about which could be worth millions.

Ryan Gosling was the guy; plastering the walls of Tumblr pages with endless looping gifs of his chiselled physique. He wanted more, and despite being linked with every film requiring a handsome, brooding lead, he turned his hand to directing and writing with ‘Lost River’.

Dr Who Star Matt Smith Cast In Ryan Gosling's 'How To Catch A Monster'

Ryan Gosling Matt Smith Christina Hendricks Benedict Cumberbatch

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has been cast in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut How To Catch A Monster, The Guardian reports. The movie will be written by Drive star Gosling, with Christina Hendricks and Eva Mendes already cast. Hendricks plays the role of Billy, a mother of two who finds herself entering a “macabre underworld” when her teenage son Bones discovers a secret road, which leads to an underwater town.

What results will be something betwixt a modern fairytale and a film noir fantasy. The film’s synopsis reveals “Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive.” Not much else is known, at least not publicly, about the film and it’s not clear what role Matt Smith will play, though it’s understood he will be the male lead. Though Eva Mendes (Gosling’s girlfriend) is said to be attached to the movie, her role is also not known, as yet. Smith recently finished his third series of Doctor Who and will begin filming How To Catch A Monster in the Spring.

It looks as though Matt may well be following in the footsteps of Benedict Cumberbatch, an equally ‘quintessentially British’ actor making a name for himself in Hollywood. It’s a pretty big deal for Smith to have landed the role in Gosling’s movie, which has been attracting attention since it was announced back in August. And of course, having played Doctor Who, he’s plenty of expertise when it comes to dealing with monsters.

Forget their billing as co-stars, there's only one star in town when Christina Hendricks makes an appearance on the red carpet, and Elle Fanning and Alice Englebert had to take a back seat to the 37 year-old as she grabbed the lion's share of the spotlight at a screening of Ginger & Rosa yesterday at the AFI FIlm Festival (November 7). Hendricks wore a sequined low-cut figure-hugging top that showed off her cleavage, matching it with an also-sequined headpiece.

Getting Ready For The Primetime Emmys: Our Predictions!

Bryan Cranston Vince Gilligan Claire Danes Lena Dunham Jim Parsons Aaron Paul Christina Hendricks

The 64th Annual Primetime Emmys kicks off this Sunday (September 23rd) and what better way to spend a Friday night than trying to predict who’ll walk home with the big prizes? None. There’s none, apart from maybe watching some of the shows nominated.

The headline this year will be Breaking Bad v Mad Men, and all things considered, it looks like Walter White v Gus will snatch it for Vince Gilligan’s meth-lord drama. Breaking Bad has been somewhat of a revelation since Mr White first approached Pinkman to propose a small time meth empire, but it’ll be fondly remembered in TV lover’s hearts as one of the greatest shows to ever grace a box-set. Contact Music predicts Breaking Bad to break Mad Men’s spell, halting the 50’s advertising magnate’s quest for a 5th Primetime Emmy.

Elsewhere in the drama category are; Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones and Homeland, and you can guarantee that HBO’s prohibition crime drama will clean up on any set design, make up and costume categories. Claire Danes should pick up Outstanding actress in a drama for her startling role in terrorist thriller Homeland, whilst we tip Bryan Cranston to make it a special evening for AMC by picking up his fourth Emmy award for the male award.
