After much love from critics and fans alike, Guardians of the Galaxy has reached a new box office milestone. Marvel's space opera is now the top grossing movie of 2014 - as if there was ever any doubt. Entertainment Weekly broke the news on Friday that Guardians had topped Captain America: The Winter Soldier for the 2014 throne. And in case you were wondering, yes, it definitely deserves the title.

Apparently, Guardians of the Galaxy isn't only the best Marvel flick, it's also the most profitable.

There may or may not be a pattern there. The Winter Soldier brought in $259.7 million domestically after its release in March, but it was no match for Guardians'  $274.6 million. That was at the start of the weekend, so the stats are likely to look even better after the final count on Monday.

Guardians of the Galaxy hit theaters on August 1 and has topped its $170 million budget many times over since then. The film's profits from foreign markets have nearly matched the domestic gross with $273.1 million.

The action movie topped the weekend box office, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming in at No. 2 with $11.7 million and If I Stay grabbing the No. 3 spot with $9.3 million.
