Steve Rogers is a sickly young man who has always been bullied in the streets of 1940's Brooklyn because of his weight. He applies for World War II military duty in an attempt to toughen up but is rejected as 'unfit for duty' because of his frailness. Steve isn't put off, however and attempts to enlist again, despite dissuasion from his friend, 'Bucky' Barnes.
Steve's luck takes a turn for the better when he shows an incredible amount of bravery and is recruited by a scientist, Dr. Abraham Erskine, into secret squad of soldiers, where he is chosen to be the first in an experiment to create a breed of 'super soldiers'.
Steve is injected with serum and put into a chamber, where he grows tall and muscular and becomes known as Captain America. One of his first missions is to stop Adolf Hitler's head of advanced weaponry, Johann Schmidt. Schmidt reinvents himself as Red Skull and starts planning to steal a mysterious object known as a Tesseract, or a 'cosmic cube' and use it to achieve world domination. Captain America teams up with his friend Bucky, as well as a team of commandos and his attractive officer Peggy Carter, to help defend the ideals of America.
