The Huntsman: Winter's War Review

Weak

Aside from success at the box office, there was nothing about 2012's rather uneven fantasy Snow White and the Huntsman that screamed out for a sequel. And indeed, this prequel/sequel hybrid doesn't quite make sense, muddling its premise by straining to keep Snow White herself out of the story (she's always just off screen) while spinning a tale that feels so derivative that we feel like we've seen it all before. The powerhouse cast does what it can, aided by some fabulous costumes, but it's impossible to escape the feeling that there's nothing to it.

Decades before her encounter with Snow White, Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) was just beginning her violent march toward power when her sister Freya (Emily Blunt) suffered a terrible tragedy. Believing that love itself betrayed her, Freya moves to another kingdom and inflicts a frozen winter on her subjects, raiding the surrounding lands for children she will raise to fight, with love between them forbidden. When her two top fighters, Eric and Sara (Chris Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain), can't help but fall for each other, they are severely punished. Years later, after Eric's adventure with Ravenna and Snow White, he sets out to get rid of Ravenna's pesky magic mirror, accompanied by four frisky dwarfs (Nick Frost, Rob Brydon, Sheridan Smith and Alexandra Roach). And this puts them all on a collision course with the icy Freya.

The script feels like it was written by a committee desperate to get something, anything on-screen. The first half of the film is essentially the backstory, and the second half is a Hobbit-style quest with moments of random Game of Thrones-style action thrown in simply to give the special effects team a workout. This isn't too surprising considering that the movie is the directing debut of effects expert Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. So if it makes little logical sense, at least it looks achingly cool, especially when the duelling divas are clad in spectacular frocks by Colleen Atwood.

Chakrams At The Ready! Who Should Play Xena In The Rumoured TV Re-Boot?

Lucy Lawless Gina Carano Charlize Theron Zooey Deschanel Ronda Rousey Ruby Rose Gemma Arterton Zoe Saldana Laverne Cox

So, rumours are circulating that a modern reboot of the 90s cult show 'Xena: Warrior Princess' is set to hit screens in the near future. It would be great to see Lucy Lawless back in that badass leather corset but, chances are, if it does ever return, it's likely to have a new wearer. But who should it be?

Lucy Lawless

In a world where feminism has become re-invigorated and strong female role models are being taken seriously in movies and on the small screen, it seems only right that 'Xena: Warrior Princess' be brought back as part of this phenomenon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi are involved in her resurrection (literally) with the series suggested to arrive in 2016 and take on a kind of Katniss Everdeen in 'The Hunger Games' angle. Original star Lucy Lawless is keen to crush our dreams, though, telling Twitter, 'Sorry, friends! news of a #Xena reboot is just a rumor. I'd love it to happen one day but it's still in the wishful thinking stage', but it still got us thinking about who we'd like to see in the role if it ever did come back.

Libby Day is a young woman, still permanently scarred from the events of her childhood. As a 7-year-old girl living in Kansas, she witnessed the brutal slaughter of her family, only weeks after discovering a bizarre interest of her brother Ben's and evidence that he practiced Satanism. After she accused Ben, then 16-years-old, of murder, he was locked up for life and her name went down in crime history. It left her with money from a charitable fund and royalities from her autobiography, but now in her early 30s she's completely broke. Soon though she meets Lyle Wirth, a member of a ghoulish group named The Kill Club, full of crime obsessed wannabe detectives who enjoy solving vicious crimes. They offer her money to help them solve what really happened when she was a girl, because hardly any of them believe her brother was the perpetrator of the massacre. She's sure it was him, but now she's forced to return to that time in her life and remember exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the tragedy - and that gets even more complicated when she finally visits Ben in prison.

Mad Max: Fury Road Returns George Miller To His Roots

George Miller Tom Hardy Charlize Theron

It's been 30 years since George Miller completed his trilogy of movies starring Mel Gibson: Mad Max (1979), The Road Warrior (1981) and Beyond Thunderdome (1985). In the intervening years he's kept busy with the Babe and Happy Feet franchises. But now he's back with Mad Max: Fury Road, which he refuses to call either a sequel or a reboot. He's just freshening the franchise, like the James Bond movies do every few years.

Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury RoadTom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road

And he said this week that he has "other stories and other scripts" ready to go if Fury Road is a box office success. "It really depends on whether everyone, particularly me, has an appetite to go back into the wasteland," he says of the post-apocalyptic desert setting. "It's like asking a woman who's just given birth, 'You wanna try it again?'"

Mad Max: Fury Road Review

Extraordinary

Leave it to a veteran to show the young sparks how to do it: it's been 30 years since George Miller last visited his post-apocalyptic hero Max Rockatansky, and now he's back with the best-staged action thriller of the year, a blockbuster that dares to have meaningful themes and complex characters. He also recreates Mad Max as a kind of James Bond franchise with a story that sits alongside the earlier films, not before or after, and an actor who brings a new energy to the role.

In a desert wasteland where people trade water and oil to survive, Max (Tom Hardy) is a loner haunted by the death of his family. Then he's captured by a gang from the Citadel, a towering rock city run by the tyrant Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), who has positioned himself as a god who keeps his enslaved people on a short leash. On a mission to collect oil, Joe's top imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) veers her war-rig off into the desert. So Joe sends a gang after her. Leading the charge is the gung-ho Nux (Nicholas Hoult), who uses Max, strapped to his car like a grille ornament, as a blood-bag to supply energy. But after a series of clashes involving three other gangs of desert marauders, Max and Nux end up on board Furiosa's rig, in which she is hoping to smuggle Joe's five young wives to safety.

The plot itself is fairly blunt, which means that the film requires very little dialogue (Max doesn't speak at all for the first 45 minutes, mainly because his houth is actually bolted shut). Even so, Miller fills every shot with telling details that strengthen the characters and provide insight into what they are doing, building more intriguing relationships with suspicious glances than most filmmakers do with endless conversation.

Charlize Theron Claims Women Are Misrepresented In Sci Fi Movies

Charlize Theron Tom Hardy Mad Max George Miller

Charlize Theron has spoken out about what she believes is the tendency of sci-fi movies to misrepresent female characters. She is currently one of the stars of Mad Max: Fury Road and claims that the film is an anomaly in that it does contain strong female lead characters.

The 39 year old actress, who portrays Imperator Furiosa in George Miller’s re-boot of his own original imagining of a post-apocalypse Australia, was speaking on ‘Live! With Kelly and Michael’ on Monday, and she vented her frustration at the typical depiction of women in science fiction films.
