Supermodels are usually known for their aversion to food, but it was a different story at this year’s Chanel Paris Fashion Week show. Karl Lagerfeld turned the famous fashion house’s runway show into the chicest supermarket around as Cara Delevingne and Kendall Jenner took to the catwalk.

One might wonder why on earth Karl Lagerfeld decided on a supermarket as the theme for his show, after all the designer claimed in 2012 that he’d never even been to one! While Karl may not be doing his own weekly shop, he’s called the supermarket the ‘great equaliser’, the place where you’ll find all types of women, so then where better setting for a fashion show?

The Chanel creative director has long been known for his original and creative shows at Paris Fashion Week, he’s even previously had an underwater show, but transforming the Grande Palis in Paris into a fully stocked supermarket was no easy feet. The shelves were stacked from top to bottom with everything you’d expect to find in your normal supermarket, but a much chicer version. There were drinks of all different colours, all bearing the Chanel brand, Chanel ketchup renamed haute Ketchup, Chanel bon bons and even eggs! Of course there was also Chanel branded diet Cola, because Mr Lagerfeld is a bit of an addict when it comes to the fizzy drink. Adding to the supermarket theme guests watched the show from packing crates, (sounds uncomfortable).

Of course the main focus of any Chanel show has to be clothing and this collection gave us a little bit of everything all mixed together. The classic tweed was there, in bubblegum pink as were the cocoon shapes. Keeping it casual there wee plenty of leggings and crop tops as well as sneakers because you cant do your weekly shop in stilettos. Less comfortably there were also corsets, which this time were given zip fastenings. The colour pallette was extremely varied including brights, pastels, metallic and even more autumnal tones. Then there was a vacuum packed Chanel 2.55 bag on show as well as a milk carton purses and an egg box clutch!

Taking to the catwalk was of course Cara Delevingne who was the main focus of the show as ever, she got to walk down the (supermarket) aisle arm in arm with Karl himself. Then there was Kim Kardashian’s little sister, Kendall Jenner who made her Chanel debut walking in the show with tweed dreadlocks. Looking on was actress Keira Knightley, Michelle Rodriguez and pop star Rihanna. Post show it all descended in to a fashion A-list supermarket sweep as Cara and fellow model Joan Small got in trolleys and were joined by good friend Rihanna, as the girls pretened to chug from the Chanel bottles.

As bonkers as it all might sound and look, the Chanel show really was a sight to be hold. By taking something as mundane as the supermarket and adding colours, models and of course the Chanel touch Lagerfeld presented something to aspire to in the most everyday setting. Most of all it was really, really fun, who wants a boring catwalk show when you can have Cara doing a trolley dash? All we can sayis well done Mr Lagerfeld, if only you ran our local Tescos.
