Britney Spears caused a stir in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve as she kicked off her residency with a spectacular performance of all her best-loved hits.

The 'Work Bitch' singer was a highly anticipated event for all who attended and certainly kicked off 2014 in style. The show was awash with more sequins and scantily-clad, extremely toned backing dancers than you could imagine and, in spite of the poor ratings her latest album 'Britney Jean' received, no-one could deny that she was on form throughout the night.

With an eyeful of skilled dance moves and artistic displays, and an earful of all her most famous hits such as 'Toxic', 'Womanizer' and 'Baby ...One More Time', critics have been remarkably more kind about her performance than her record. The USA Today reviewed that 'Spears stomped into town with a 24-hit salute to her 15 years of dance confections that artfully melded spectacle with stagecraft', and MTV commented on the 'larger-than-life production, blaring beats and rapid-fire dance moves'.

On the other hand, many critics were quick to point out that she appeared to be lip-synching for a lot of the performance despite her wearing a microphone, with Billboard mentioning, 'Only occasionally were any seemingly live vocals heard [and] there was a certain thrill in actually hearing Spears breathing into the microphone - however infrequent.' Planet Hollywood, where Britney will be holding fifty shows this year and another fifty in 2015, were quick to deny any miming.

Either way, there were definitely some unforgettable moments, such as a very serious wardrobe malfunction when her sparkly bodysuit became unzipped; Britney kept her cool though, continuing her song as a dancer fumbled with the fastening. The popstar even pulled her beau David Lucado on to the stage to indulge in a spot of bondage, which involved Lucado being leashed on his hands and knees.

It's no wonder risqué starlet Miley Cyrus enjoyed it, as she watched from prime position on the front row - something that she was proud to reveal to her Twitter followers.
