Director Brad Peyton Discusses 'Rampage' And The Video Game Movie "Curse"

Brad Peyton

When it comes to the world of movies, video game adaptations have never really done the best after making their debut. The recent 'Assassin's Creed' movie, along with films of the past such as 'Super Mario Bros.' and 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time' failed to light a fire in the belly of long time fans, with less-than-infectious storylines despite the A-list cast members.

With negativity surrounding the majority of video game films, any time an adaptation is released there's a reference to the "curse" surrounding movies of the genre from critics and viewers alike. Whether or not the curse will ever be truly broken remains to be seen, but one of this year's biggest releases will put to the test.

Rampage [2018] Trailer

Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson) is passionate about his job at Everglades National Park, particularly with regards to an intelligent ape, his best friend, named George. One night, some kind of missile hits George's enclosure which, upon inspection, sprays him with an unknown substance. The next morning, Davis arrives to find George cowering in his cave in obvious fear and pain, and Davis realises he has grown at least two feet since he last saw him and his weight has almost doubled.

With the help of scientist Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris), they find the object that caused George's transformation, and deduces that it's part of some genetic editing technology being developed by the government. Of course, given that it's managed to find its way into the home of George - who, incidentally, is displaying more and more unpredictable behaviour - that means there's likely to be other 'edited' animals out there, something like... a 30-foot wolf, or a gigantic crocodile.

Davis protests about George being taken away by the military for testing, but this now-outsize ape can certainly take care of himself and is not about to become a science experiment if he can help it. But there might be a chance for Davis to get his friend back; there's talk of an antidote for the technology being created and it soon becomes clear that Davis is the only person willing to chance it than execute the innocent animals.

The Rock Shows His Softer Side: 'I Know What It's Like To Struggle'

Dwayne Johnson Brad Peyton

Dwayne Johnson opens up about how events in his personal life helped him connect to the problems of single father rescue pilot Ray Gaines in his new earthquake thriller 'San Andreas'; his second movie with director Brad Peyton which hits the UK today.

The movie sees a first responder helicopter pilot on a journey to rescue his estranged daughter following a devastating earthquake along the San Andreas fault in California. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson - A Good Fit For Dramatic 'San Andreas' Disaster Movie? [Trailer]

For as long as they have existed, the disaster movie genre has had a strong emphasis on natural disasters brought on by, at first, the abuse of science, and now, mankind's abuse of the planet. This is not always the case, as films like Roland Emmerich's '2012' can sometimes use the disaster movie genre as a way to use the glorious visuals of the literal end of the world as a way to tell an exciting adventure story.

Dwayne Johnson in 'San Andreas'
Sure, he's cool - but can you imagine this man unable to just heroically save the day with ease?

But for people living in California, with the constant threat of the San Andreas Fault looming in the background, a movie about natural disasters can be a terrifying glimpse of possible reality. So, what brilliant actor is set to convey the heart-felt emotions of 2015's 'San Andreas'? DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' JOHNSON; perhaps an unlikley choice...

San Andreas Trailer

California is well-known for playing host to regular earthquakes, being located right on top of the San Andreas fault; in other words, the tectonic plate boundary that separates the Pacific and the North American Plates. However, rarely have earthquakes been seen that have reduced whole cites to rubble, caused huge chasms in the Earth and deadly tidal waves through streets killing thousands of people. The only option for residents is to get as far away as possible, though with such a huge disaster ripping through the state, this one is still going to have an effect on the other side of the country. Meanwhile, chopper pilot Ray and his estranged wife are desperate to find their missing daughter Blake first, and use a Fire Department rescue helicopter to search high and low throughout the state.
