Billy Bob Thornton Thinks 'Bad Santa 2' Is Cathartic

Billy Bob Thornton

It's been 13 years since Billy Bob Thornton created the indelible character of Willie Soke in Bad Santa. And as he finally reprises the role for Bad Santa 2 this year, Thornton is still bemused by the character's longevity, despite the fact that he knew it was a winner from the start.

Bad Santa 2Billy Bob Thornton stars in 'Bad Santa 2'

"We knew it had potential," he says of the original. "When I first read the script I was like, 'Wow, this would be the first time this has ever been done!' So we had some confidence that people would get it and would like it. But that it became that big? No. It's become iconic, and so we just wanted to get as close as we could to it on the second one. People ask me if it's as filthy as the first one, and I say, yes, maybe a shade more!"

Bad Santa 2 Review

Weak

The 2003 comedy Bad Santa is a holiday classic that skilfully mixes gross-out humour with resolutely unsentimental emotion. So it's very disappointing that this 13-years-later sequel reassembles the cast then merely coasts on the vulgarity, never bothering to develop the characters or plot. It's just as rude, and it provides some solid laughs along the way, but the story never engages the audience, which leaves the movie feeling naughty but never nice.

Over these years, Willie (Billy Bob Thornton) has continued his slacker lifestyle into his early 60s. He still lives in Phoenix, and has continued to try to ignore the attentions of the sweetly naive Thurman (Brett Kelly), who has just turned 21. Then Willie's treacherous ex-cohort Marcus (Tony Cox) gets out of prison and approaches him with a big heist. Against his better judgement, Willie accompanies him to Chicago, where two nasty surprises await: the plan is to steal millions from a children's charity, and Willie's estranged mother Sunny (Kathy Bates) is organising the robbery. Annoyed, Willie instantly falls for the sexy Diane (Christina Hendricks), who is married to the charity's shifty boss (Ryan Hansen). Meanwhile, Marcus tries to seduce a security guard (Jenny Zigrino). And Thurman turns up unannounced.

It's depressing that, after years of talk about a sequel, this haphazard plot is the best the writers could come up with. Every element of the narrative is deeply contrived to merely string together a series of filthy jokes, rude insults, noisy sex and criminal slapstick. All of this would have been welcome if the comedy sprang from the messy relationships or personalities. But everything is so static and pointless that there's nothing to hold the audience's attention, aside from a number of witty gags that pop up out of nowhere. So at least there are a few solid laughs.

Billy Bob Thornton's 'Bad Santa 2' Ice Cream Analogy

Billy Bob Thornton

Billy Bob Thornton returns as the world's worst Santa Claus in 'Bad Santa 2' this week, thirteen years after the release of the original movie. Naturally, old Willie Soke is as crude as he ever was, even if he's trying to live life on the straight and narrow these days.

Bad Santa 2Billy Bob Thornton stars in Bad Santa 2

Christmas is a time for cheesy movies with inspirational messages about love and family; 'A Christmas Carol', 'It's A Wonderful Life', 'Miracle on 34th Street' - you get the picture. After a while it can get a bit sickly, and that's when you need a flick that's not afraid to tell it like it is. Enter 'Bad Santa' and it's sequel 'Bad Santa 2'. Appealing for it's seamless blend of comedy and drama - something that Billy Bob has the perfect analogy for.

Bad Santa 2 Trailer

Since we last met Willie T. Stokes, his life has had plenty of ups and downs; but mainly downs. He's still in touch with his curly haired friend, Thurman but he's the only person he really has in his life. Thurman is now fully grown and at the age of 21, he's now old enough to drink and he works at a sub sandwich shop.

Thurman is just as naive as the last time we saw him but he has just as much faith in his buddy Willie as he ever has done. Willie can't help but still feel protective over the boy he helped save from bullies all those years prior.

As for Willie's old partner Marcus, as far as Willie's concerned hopefully he's still rotting in jail after attempting to kill Willie. When Marcus gets in contact with our cranky aging ex-Santa, he's surprised to hear from him and even more surprised to learn of a new con Marcus tells him about which could be worth millions.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot - Teaser Trailer

Being over 40 and a female journalist in the city means you don't necessarily get the good projects to work on. Kim Barker is just one of those women and she's in need of a new dose of... something. Her relationship is static and her life hasn't exactly become the success story she hoped it would.

When her news organisation is looking for some new field reporters, Kim decides that it might be the chance she's looking for. Sure, the new job might be based in Kabul, but it's got to be better than what she's got. Arriving in the foreign land, she's sent to 'the fun house', a name given to the building where all the foreign journalists live. Learning how to report from two countries and moving back and forth with armed escorts soon becomes the norm for Kim and she develops a an affection for a country most would be wanting to distance themselves from.

As well as reporting - often menial - stories, Kim quickly becomes absorbed in the local way life as well as finding a few new friends also living in the fun house. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is based on Kim Barker's memoir The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Entourage - Teaser Trailer

After making a name for themselves in Hollywood, Vincent Chase and his entourage of friends from Queens have finally made a movie. The only problem is, that after securing the chance to direct the film for 100 million USD, the film has gone over-budget by 15 million. The money is being put up by a wealthy Texas billionaire, yet the catch is that he really wants a return on his investment. Chase and the gang have to ensure that the movie is a hit - otherwise, they'll have one angry producer and one murderous billionaire on their backs. That probably won't go away, even if they just move back to Queens.

Fargo regularly finds itself on the top rung of movie buffs' top lists, so when a TV adaptation was announced last year, there was obvious scepticism. Writer and showrunner Noah Hawley is the man behind the series - which extends the Coen Brothers classic movie to 10 one-hour episodes.

By mid last week, we already knew that Hawley had succeeded. The U.S critics had their say and the reviews were glorious. Now, following Fargo's premiere in the UK on Sunday (April 20, 2014), the Brits have had their say.

'Fargo' Proves A Pleasantly Dark Surprise For UK Audiences

Martin Freeman Billy Bob Thornton

Last night UK viewers got their first look at ‘Fargo’ on the small screen as the series debuted on Channel 4. Based on the Coen brothers' 1996 movie of the same name, many didn't know what to expect from the black comedy starring Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton, but as it happens the critics seem to have been pleasantly surprised.

‘Fargo’ the TV series opened much like the movie as “This is a true story” came up on the screen. It of course isn’t a true story and neither was the movie. What the film and series have in common is the small town Minnesota setting which brought back memories of the 1996 movie to TV viewers. Then there’s the characters, ‘The Office’ and ‘Sherlock’ star Martin Freeman plays Lester Nygaard, the series version of William H Macy’s character. Billy Bob Thornton is the menacing villain who corrupts Nygaard and Allison Tolman is the series’s Marge, but not pregnant.

Parkland - Clips

On November 22nd 1963 in Dallas, Texas, the hugely adored President John F. Kennedy was shot to death as he arrived in the city with First Lady Jackie Kennedy. A women's clothing manufacturer named Abraham Zapruder had no idea of the events that would unfold as he set up his camera preparing for Kennedy's arrival; no idea that his footage would be seen by millions repeatedly as the only visual evidence for what took place that day. Few people know anything about this man, or indeed the other people who ended up becoming involved in this historic tragedy, such as the doctors and nurses who were forced to perform immediate life-saving attempts even with their initial shock and devastation, and the family of alleged killer US Marine Lee Harvey Oswald.

This historical drama tells the stories of the lesser known figures who became involved with one of the most famous assassinations in the history of the world ahead its 50th anniversary. It has been directed and written by Peter Landesman who is best known for his sex slavery article 'The Girls Next Door' which was published in the New York Times. 'Parkland' will be released in UK theatres on November 8th 2013.

Billy Bob Thornton Angelina Jolie Brad Pitt Robert Duvall

You may not have heard from actor Billy Bob Thornton for a while; he featured heavily in the press who documented his marriage to Angelina Jolie at the turn of the millennium but now is scarcely seen or heard of in comparison. "My life is pretty much the way it's always been, except I'm not in a celebrity relationship," Thornton explains in an interview with USA Today, adding "And I feel pretty good about that. I don't miss it."

These Days, Billy Bob Enjoys Life Outside The Media Glare.

What he doesn't miss is the scrutiny and press hounding that accompanied his relationship with Jolie, who is now firmly coupled with Brad Pitt. The pair, who divorced in 2003, didn't exactly help sedate the press by choosing to wear vials of each other's blood around the necks. Now, the Armageddon actor has settled into a life outside the media glare but has managed to maintain his career and raise a family: an enviable accomplishment for an A-list actor who still resides in Los Angeles.

The Informers Review

OK
Here's another entry to the all-star multi-strand Los Angeles ensemble drama genre (see Short Cuts, Magnolia, Crash, Southland Tales). But while this one features strong acting and stylish filmmaking, it's emotionally empty.

In 1983 L.A., studio exec William (Thornton) wants to reconcile with his heavily medicated wife Laura (Basinger) while continuing to see his self-doubting TV newscaster mistress (Ryder). Their son Graham (Foster) is indulging in drugs and sex with his girlfriend (Heard) and best pal (Nichols), who's also sleeping with Laura for cash. Meanwhile, Graham's doorman (Renfro) is trying to please his criminal father figure (Rourke), but Graham's friend Tim (Pucci) has no interest in connecting with his dad (Isaak).

U Turn Review

Excellent
I can't imagine U Turn in any director's hands except Oliver Stone's. Breaking free from his political obsessions, Stone explores new territory, giving the material a stark edge, innovation, and a thick, memorable atmosphere. In one film he investigates adultery, incest, bad luck, Indian philosophy, gambling, paranoia, murder, deception, fraud, money, and the Russian Mafia. This is an original tale with a full plate, but surprisingly U Turn never feels crowded, contrived, or recycled. It's a feast for the senses, as long as you have a strong stomach.

Similar to Natural Born Killers in style, the film includes black & white inserts, frequent use of hand-held cameras, overexposed shots, vivid close-ups, zip-switches from smooth to grainy, unique camera angles, time-lapse sequences, and hallucinogenic effects. Stone rounded up some of his Nixon crew to establish the technical aspects of the film, including director of photography Robert Richardson, production designer Victor Kempster, and editors Hank Corwin and Thomas Nordberg. The crew shot U Turn in just 42 days, entirely on location in the actual town of Superior, Arizona, fully utilizing the vast landscape. According to the film's production information, the filmmakers revamped four blocks of Superior's main street, even creating new restaurants out of unused storefronts.

Love Actually Review

Very Good
I can only presume that the British calendar is so uniquely screwy that it allows for a Christmas movie to open a week after Halloween. Or maybe Love Actually is just in a universe of its own... one in which the prime minister is inaugurated in November and where an adverb can be used to modify a noun.

But a little oddness is forgivable: Directing a movie is a strange place for Richard Curtis, who's written umpteen Brit-friendly movies and TV shows over the years but hasn't directed one, until now.

A Family Thing Review

OK
This review is not going to win me many new friends. Already, the gushing praise has begun, and it appears A Family Thing is going to be a regular Critic's Darling. I have little doubt that momentum will give the film the best reviews of the year to date, and I have an equal suspicion that few people are going to see it.

Best described as Driving Miss Daisy 2, A Family Thing is a way-way-melodramatic picture about an aging, backwards, racist, Arkansas hick, Earl Pilcher (Robert Duvall). Earl's mother, on her death bed, writes him a letter, telling Earl that in reality, she was not his mother at all, that his real mother was a black woman, and that she died having him in childbirth. Mom #2 implores him to seek out his half-brother in Chicago, for reasons never really explained.

The Gift (2000) Review

Weak
Maybe Paramount held back on giving The Gift a wide release during the Christmas season to avoid too many reviewers saying, "This Gift is a holiday lump of coal..." or something like that. If so, good call.

The latest from Sam Raimi (For Love of the Game) is a muddled thriller, filled with tired clichés and some of the worst casting in years. Raimi, along with screenwriters Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, try so hard to create a "serious" psychic chiller that the film is practically drained of any excitement.

Continue reading: The Gift (2000) Review

Homegrown Review

OK
Movies about marijuana are historically slapsticky, funny romps (see the Cheech and Chong oeuvre). Homegrown probably started out that way, then turned into a typical drug thriller, only set in the northern California hippie community. Message to producers: Hank Azaria is a comedian, not a gun-toting action hero.

Sling Blade Review

Extraordinary
Unlike most critics, I've been largely unimpressed with Billy Bob Thornton's work in the past. From One False Move to A Family Thing, I've always found his writing to lack depth and miss a true focus.

But then there's Sling Blade, and with Thornton in complete control as the writer, director, and star of the show, I do believe he's created a real gem.

The Alamo Review

OK

If you want to remember the Alamo, the latest feature film version of the Texas fort's famous last stand may not be much help.

A beautifully produced but relatively bloodless (literally and figuratively) Hollywood rendering of the 1836 siege on San Antonio by tyrannical General Santa Anna, who was determined to recapture the territory for Mexico, it's a movie more concerned with details like Jim Bowie's terminal case of consumption than it is with the historical context of its story and its legendary characters.

In this movie, Bowie (Jason Patric) the frontier adventurer and volunteer army colonel is presented as little more than an infamous "knife fighter" haunted by his wife's death. Newspaper publisher, lawyer and militiaman Lt. Col. William B. Travis (Patrick Wilson) is just a determined dandy with questioned military skills (questioned mostly by Bowie) who rises to the occasion as temporary commander of these now-fortified grounds surrounding an unfinished mission. David "Davey" Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton) is a fiddle-playing former senator made famous by a stage play written about something he once did while wearing a coonskin hat -- and why he's even at the Alamo isn't entirely clear.
