April 2021 Favourites: We Found 'Californian Soil' To Be Sublime, 'Introvert' Extraordinary And 'Fight For You' A Fitting Oscar Winner

London Grammar The Offspring Taylor Swift Billie Eilish

April 2021 may have been one of the coldest in 60 years, but there were still enough hot releases to warm our hearts and fuel our fires. Taylor Swift released the first of six albums that she is set to re-record with her version of Fearless, Demi Lovato made a welcome come back with her seventh album, Dancing with the Devil... the Art of Starting Over and Wolf Alice delivered an incendiary second single, Smile, from their forthcoming album, Blue Weekend. Lana Del Rey, on trend with the colour palette, announced she would release her second album of the year, following up Chemtrails Over The Country Club, with Blue Banisters on July 4th. Olivia Rodrigo released a strong follow-up single to her huge hit, drivers licence whilst Billie Eilish dropped one of her weakest singles in years. Rapper DMX sadly died after suffering a heart-attack and AJ Tracey flouted CoVID rules as he attempted an eventually abandoned meet-and-greet, but none of them made our top five. Here's who did.

Billie Eilish - Your Power single review

Billie Eilish is a phenomenon; she is immensely talented, artistic, creative, bold, individual and inspiring. Why then has she chosen to set most of those characteristics and qualities to one side on her latest single, Your Power? Eilish is arguably the voice of her generation, she is a global superstar with a huge fan base and has already made an incredible impact on music and youth culture. Billie Eilish has recorded more influential music in the last four years than most artists could wish to even get close to in forty. Bad Guy, Bury A Friend, You Should See Me In A Crown and last year's final track, Therefore I Am, are all game changing, radical tracks that have offered something new and vital, pushing the boundaries of music forward on each occasion.

Billie Eilish - Your Power single review

Your Power is a good song, some might say excellent even. It embraces the soft and tender side of Billie Eilish and exposes her vulnerabilities. What is ostensibly a mild folk song, aside from the contemporary vocal treatment, has a hypnotic quality and a woozy sensibility that fits with some of Billie's previous work. Unlike her previous work however, Your Power does not showcase the formidable talents that she has. Your Power feels like it should be a Phoebe Bridgers song, in fact to the uninitiated you could be forgiven for thinking that it was a Phoebe Bridgers song. You could easily slot Your Power in to Bridgers' breakthrough debut album Stranger In the Alps without anyone even realising. This is both a tribute to the impact that Phoebe Bridgers has made in recent years, but also a signal that Billie Eilish is not without her flaws.

Top 10 Albums Of 2019: The Music That Formed The Soundtrack For A Historic End To A Decade

Billie Eilish FKA Twigs Lewis Capaldi Rammstein Stormzy Charli XCX Lana Del Rey Thom Yorke Nick Cave

We're ready to say goodbye to 2019 now that Christmas is over, but not without reflecting on what has been a wonderful year for the world of music. Whether your a pop lover or you prefer the rock world, whether rap is your life or dance is in your blood, this was a transformative year for sound. Here are the top 10 greatest albums of the last twelve months.

1. Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
Best song: Bad Guy

Without doubt the most sonically extraordinary album of this year, 18-year-old Billie Eilish's debut album 'When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?' has united both pop lovers and alternative listeners thanks to its experimental yet infectious ethos. It's naive yet poignant, fun yet deeply unsettling with themes of bravado, drugs, love, climate change and heartbreak woven throughout the poetic lyrics. There's no-one quite like Billie.

From Bad Guy To Old Town Road: The 10 Best Singles Of 2019

Billie Eilish Lewis Capaldi Maroon 5 Stormzy Taylor Swift FKA Twigs Slipknot Rammstein

This year has marked quite an explosive end to a decade in terms of music, as we appear to be looking at a future of young musicians doing exactly what they want, how they want, while many long-established artists have refused to compromise their sound to stay relevent. The result is some seriously unapologetic and infectious tunes that will stay on our playlists for a long time to come.

1. Bad Guy - Billie Eilish

She's released without doubt our favourite album of the year with 'When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?' at the age of just 17, and it's almost impossible to pick any one single to talk about here. 'Bad Guy' however is an example of how pop doesn't have to be the stereotypical sound you're used to hearing, because Billie Eilish has seriously changed the way we think about chart music.
