Ben Affleck has announced he will not be directing the stand alone Batman movie after all.

Tentatively titled ‘The Batman’, Affleck was tipped to helm the project last year, but now the actor has said he will not be able to juggle the dual responsibilities of directing and starring in the movie.

In a statement to Variety Affleck said: “There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require.

“Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director,” he continued. “I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

Studio Warner Bros. added: “Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life.”

According to Variety the decision was made by the actor and the studio together and was solely based on what’s best for the project, rather than having anything to do with the recent disappointment of the Live by Night, which Affleck directed.

Variety adds that Affleck and Warner Bros. will now begin searching for a new director and one name who’s said to be in the running is War for the Planet of the Apes helmer Matt Reeves.

Affleck will next appear as the Caped Crusader in Justice League, which hits cinemas this November. Work on the Batman solo movie is thought to begin this summer.
