The subtitle for Zack Snyder’s upcoming Batman v Superman movie has been officially announced as Dawn of Justice, meaning it's pretty clear where this one is going. We already knew that a Justice League movie was next on Snyder’s list, but the subtitle certainly implies that this movie will serve as a set up for the fourth instalment. But who are the Justice League and why should we be excited to see them together on screen?

Superhero collectives don’t get much bigger than The Justice League, that is, if you ignore the Avengers. But for DC Comics, The Justice League has been their ultimate team of superheroes since the 1960s.

DC’s first superhero collective, the Justice Society of America debuted in 1940 and ran until their popularity waned in the 1950s. But when DC was in the middle of it’s Silver Age of the 1960s, the JSA was reintroduced and rebranded as The Justice League. In order to stop any confusion DC announced that the JSA existed on "Earth-Two" and the Justice League on “Earth-One”, which also opened the door for cross over comics.

The original Justice League consisted of Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Woman, with Green Arrow, the Atom and Hawkman appearing later. The collective’s first base was a secret cave outside of the small town of Happy Harbor, Rhode Island. Over the coming decades many of DC’s finest would have stints in the Justice League including the Red Tornado, Hawkwoman, the Vixen, Huntress, Red Arrow, the Elephant Woman and Cyborg.

As big as the list of some time Justice League members is, their list of adversaries is even longer, The Joker, Lex Luther, Sinestro and Queen Bee have all come up against The Justice League at some point. Plus at times, the villains have even created groups of their own such as The Legion of Doom, the Secret Society of Supervillains and the creatively named, Anti-Justice League.

So far, not much is known about how Snyder’s upcoming movie will tackle the Justice League. Of course Batman and Superman will be there, as well as Wonder Woman, who is being played by Gal Godot in Batman v Superman and presumably Cyborg whom Ray Fisher has been cast as. But these four are not enough to make up a full Justice League. The inclusion of Cyborg is the most interesting thing we know so far, considering he made his comic book debut in 1980 and only became a Justice League member in 2011. Cyborg’s Justice League appearance was part of the faction’s 2011 reboot where the initial line up consisted of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, the Flash and Cyborg.

Who knows exactly what Justice League Snyder will want to take to the big screen. He’s already got three iconic characters in Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman so he could go the route of using lesser known heroes to make up the rest of the numbers. But whatever Justice League he chooses to present ,the movie certainly has the potential to rival The Avengers success. But first we have Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to look forward to and that’s still a lengthly two years away from release! Until then, the Justice League has quite a bit of time to assemble a line-up worthy of the big screen and lucky for Snyder, there's plenty of heroes to choose from.
