Fans of the Beastie Boys are lobbying officials in New York to rename a street intersection featured on their 1989 album, Paul's Boutique, after the hip-hop trio.

A petition has been set up on Change.org by superfan LeRoy MCCarthy in an effort convince local officials that the corner of Ludlow Street and Rivington Street in Manhattan should officially be called Beastie Boys Square.

MCCarthy writes, "The album, released July 25th 1989, was groundbreaking, and it encompassed these Boys from Nyc, rapping about life and times from their point of view. Because of the album cover photo, and the Beastie Boys were ever-changing Nyc artist (sic), the location of Ludlow Street and Rivington Street would be a great place to honor Beastie Boys with a corner co-naming."

MCCarthy is hoping to secure 10,000 signatures in order for his petition to be taken into consideration by authorities, but had only attracted the support of just over 200 fans as Wenn went to press.

If fans are successful, it won't be the only city honour bestowed upon the Beastie Boys - a children's playground in the musicians' native borough of Brooklyn was named in memory of late member Adam Yauch, aka McA, earlier this year (13). He died of cancer in May, 2012.
