Microsoft’s decision to unbundle the controversial Kinect camera from retail units of their new console, the Xbox One, was initially seen as a financial incentive for potential customers. But it would appear as though there are performance benefits too with a reported 10% increase in GPU speeds. 


"The additional resources allow access to up to 10 per cent additional GPU performance," a spokesperson told Eurogamer. "We're committed to giving developers new tools and flexibility to make their Xbox One games even better by giving them the option to use the GPU reserve in whatever way is best for them and their games."

Microsoft created controversy when it was revealed that the Xbox One would not be available without the Kinect camera, which allows players to control the U.I with movements and video chat with their friends over Skype. They created even more controversy when they announced that the two pieces of hardware would be available separately, with many current users dismayed that they had spent more money on the bundled package without realising they would be able to purchase a cheaper option.

“In June we’re releasing a new SDK making it possible for developers to access additional GPU resources previously reserved for Kinect and system functions. The team is continually calibrating the system to determine how we can give developers more capabilities’, the spokesman added.

The One’s rival - Sony's PS4 - is currently leading the way in the sales race, and is well documented to be more powerful. This latest news might help close the gap in the quest for the much-fabled 1080p/60fps on consoles.
