The hip-hop star was released from prison in 2013 following a 28-month sentence for tax and weapons charges, and he's been hard at work since then to rebuild his career.

As part of his return, Ja Rule tells Billboard he's planning on getting back in the studio with his former Murder Inc. Records labelmate Ashanti, despite a falling out in the mid-2000s.

"Me and Ashanti are about to go on a big world tour... and we're putting together a music and film project with our whole Natural Born Killers tour and EP. It's kind-of like a Streets is Watching type of film," Ja Rule said, referring to Jay Z's 1998 film. "So yeah, we're doing something kind of cool and fun. It's been a long time in the making."

The rapper divulges the plot is a cross between Barbra Streisand's iconic A Star Is Born and serial killer black comedy Natural Born Killers.

"It's fictional," he added. "It has a musical feel to it, and it also has a street edge. It's going to be fun and sexy."

Ashanti rose to fame in 2001 when she featured on Ja Rule's hit single Always on Time. They also scored chart success in 2002 with Fat Joe on What's Luv? and released their last collaboration, Wonderful, in 2004.
