A huge proportion of those hitting the cinemas this weekend will be watching Sylvester Stallone shooting people's heads off in a bid to defeat the fearsome....uh..Mel Gibson. Though despite his on-screen persona as an all-action beefcake, Sylvester Stallone is actually one of the NRA's biggest enemies. In fact, Stallone is without doubt the biggest anti-gun star working in Hollywood.

The Expendables 3Sylvester Stallone hates guns

"Until America, door to door, takes every handgun, this is what you're gonna have," the actor famously said. "It's pathetic. It really is pathetic. It's sad. We're living in the Dark Ages [in America]."

Stallone is no millionaire liberal. He's not George Clooney. He's believed to have supported every Republican candidate since Reagan and attended George W. Bush's inauguration with Chuck Norris and Meat Loaf. However, he's also donated money to Democrats including Joe Biden and Barbara Boxer.

Stallone first became vocal about his anti-guns stance following the shooting of his friend, the comedian Phil Hartman in 1998, telling Access Hollywood, "It has to be stopped, and someone really has to go on the line, a certain dauntless political figure, and say, 'It's ending, it's over, all bets are off, it's not 200 years ago, we don't need [the Second Amendment] anymore, and the rest of the world doesn't have it,"

Stallone attended an event to prevent gun violence back in 2006 and in response to the Newtown Elementary School in 2012 said: "I know people get [upset] and go, 'They're going to take away the assault weapon' Who.needs an assault weapon? Like really, unless you're carrying out an assault. You can't hunt with it.Who's going to attack your house, a f*cking army?"

The Expendables 3 is set for release on Friday (August 15, 2014).
