The Sony leak has thrown up plenty of interesting titbits in recent weeks - there was Fury and Annie arriving online (the latter before it had hit cinemas), there was Scott Rudin's takedown of Angelina Jolie and now, the revelation that Marvel tried to get Spider-Man involved in Captain America: Civil War.

Correspondence sent by Sony chief Amy Pascal reveals Marvel's approach about including Spider-Man in the third Captain America movie, Civil Wars, which is due for release in 2016. The superhero - currently played by Andrew Garfield in the recently rebooted series - plays a key role in the 2006 comic book storyline, though Sony holds the licensing rights to produce the films.

Nevertheless, talks appear to have broken down, though Sony President Doug Belgrad did pitch the possibility of Marvel producing a new Spider-Man trilogy with Sony retaining "creative control, marketing and distribution."

The Wall Street Journal also says that Sony's latest plans for Spider-Man involve an animated comedy film produced by Chris Miller and Phil Lord - creators of The LEGO movie. They also have plans for various Spider-Man spinoffs, most notably a female superhero team-up, Sinister Six and Venom. After the critical lashing given to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony know they can't simply rely on the Andrew Garfield-Emma Stone connection.
