The screen adaptation of John Le Carre’s book, ‘A Most Wanted Man’ has been made all the more pertinent by the death of its leading star and much-loved actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died in early February following a drug overdose. Watch the newly released trailer for the film below.

A Most Wanted Man, Philip Seymour Hoffman

'A Most Wanted Man' focuses on a rogue German counter-terrorism expert Gunter Bachmann, played by Seymour Hoffman. The half-Chechen, half-Russian immigrant Issa Karpov (Grigoriy Dobrygin) – who is thought to be part of a militant jihadist group in post-9/11 Hamburg - is his prime target.

Issa has access to a bank account swelling with money from unknown and suspicious origin. With the British, German and American intelligence agencies hot on his tail, Gunter goes to great lengths, capturing, kidnapping and interrogating the human rights lawyer, Annabel Richter (Rachel McAdams) with the hope of turning her into an allied spy.

In addition to an intriguing plot written by the modern day master of spy thrillers, Willem Dafoe, Robin Wright, Nina Hoss, Franz Hartwig, Kostja Ullman, Rainer Bock, Charlotte Schwab, Max Volkert Martens, Martin Wuttke and Turkish actress Derya Alabor all comprise a fantastic cast.

The film premiered at Sundance, but doesn’t have a solid release date for the U.K and only a limited release date of July 25 for The US. IMDB has German and Swedish release date pinned at Sept 11 and Sept 19 respectively. But the Sundance appearance mean the critics have had a chance to get a look at it, and here’s what they had to say:

“This admirably textured thriller rooted in Eastern immigrant-laden Hamburg will prove absorbing to attentive audiences internationally who don't need everything spelled out to them,” wrote Todd McCarthy for The Hollywood Reporter.

“It is on Philip Seymour Hoffman's shoulders that much of the film sits, and his disheveled, cigarette-fueled German spy character provides another of his inimitable sad-sack characters that he brings to the screen better than pretty much anyone,” wrote Jason Gorber for Twitch.

“It's a professional old-school espionage outing, intricate as clockwork and acted with relish by the ever-watchable Hoffman,” said Xan Brookes of The Guardian.
