Even though Neil Patrick Harris has hosted numerous award ceremonies several times, including the Tony and Emmy Awards, the 41 year-old actor was still surprised when he was offered the gig of emceeing the 2015 Academy Awards.

Harris recently recalled his initial reaction when landing the pinnacle of award shows in an interview with 'Good Morning America' on Friday (Oct 17th) while promoting his new memoir, 'Choose Your Own Autobiography.'

"I've been on this book tour, just starting it ... and then at the end of last week you get a call saying the Oscar people want to talk to you maybe," Harris said. "Then you wonder what that means and then actually you do it and you have to announce it and it suddenly turns into another level."

"(I had) no idea at all," he admitted about being offered the role. "I thought weirdly because I'd hosted other shows that that was a strike against me a little bit, because they had gone with people before (such as) Seth MacFarlane and stuff who were sort of new."

The 'How I Met Your Mother' star contemplated that Oscar producers may have decided to pick him based on his recent starring role in the drama 'Gone Girl.' He joked, "Being in a movie helps."

Harris made the announcement via social media on Wednesday (Oct 15th) by sharing a photo of himself checking hosting the Oscars of his bucket list, so when asked if he "dared to dream" about landing the role, he said "I suppose so."

"The awards shows, you can't really decide that you want to host them," Harris added. "They call you and ask you if you will. Even if you pitch yourself for it, it feels desperate. So you just have to hope that the spotlight hits you."
