2005's Hurricane Katrina was one of America's most devastating natural disasters of recent human history with 2,000 mortalities and a city left in ruins. Upcoming movie Hours is set during the almighty storm but focuses on one man and his plight to save his young family.

Watch The 'Hours' Trailer:

Paul Walker (The Fast and The Furious) and Genesis Rodriguez (Identity Thief) star as Nolan and Abigail, a couple about to welcome their first born child into the world as the storm hits. Born five weeks premature, the little baby girl must breathe through a ventilator which begins to lose power after the hurricane wipes out the hospital's electricity, leaving the place in darkness.

Luckily, it doesn't look like there'll be any The Day After Tomorrow-style wolves running about in the dark and deserted hospital but the trailer gives a flavour of how tense and heart-racing the movie becomes as Nolan fights to keep his daughter breathing.

Though the plotline is of fictional origin, Hurricane Katrina was a very real even in living memory for most Americans, so the movie is likely to strike an emotional chord with its viewers as well as whipping them along for an original survival thriller about a father and daughter.

Hours is directed and written by Eric Heisserer ('The Thing', 'Final Destination 5', 'A Nightmare on Elm Street') and produced by The Conjuring and Scary Movie's Peter Safran. Though the filmmakers may be more associated with outright monster horror movies, it appears as though their skills and attention have been turned to making a more human interest tale of love and bravery against the odds.

Shot on location in New Orleans in 2012, the movie is produced and financed by The Safran Company and premiered at this year's SXSW Film Festival in March. Hours will be released on the 13th December.
