Despite winning an Oscar earlier this year for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, 2014 has been a pretty quite year for Jared Leto, the actor. The 42 year old has instead been spending time working on his other career, as frontman for band 30 Seconds to Mars. But could Leto have finally found his next big screen role as The Joker in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie?

The Hollywood Reporter writes that sources have confirmed to them that Leto may be under consideration for the Joker role in the upcoming supervillain movie. However they also note a deal could be in the very early stages and that calls to both Warner Bros. and Leto’s reps went unreturned.

The Suicide Squad film will be directed by David Ayer, who helmed Brad Pitt’s latest outing, Fury, with Justin Marks writing the screenplay.

But Leto isn't the only big name who has been rumoured to be in talks with prodcuers. Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne have all found their names linked to the project at one time or another.

Also known as Task Force X, the Suicide Squad was created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru and first appeared in Brave and the Bold No. 25. Most recently it has grown to include iteration characters Deadshot, King Shark, Captain Boomerang and Harley Quinn.

The stories center on the group of convicted supervillains who are given a chance to redeem themselves through dangerous missions.The film is set for release on Aug. 5, 2016.

Since his Oscar win earlier this year, Leto is yet to find a follow up to Dallas Buyers Club. The last film he was heavily rumoured to be appearing in was Marvel’s Doctor Strange, but that role appears to have fallen to Benedict Cumberbatch.

However Leto does appear to have something up his sleeve. He told The Hollywood Reporter last week, "I do [have my eye on one project]. I am excited about what's happening. There are incredible opportunities and I'm very grateful for them. I'm looking forward to making films again now that the tour is wrapping up. It's going to be an exciting 2015.”

But the actor isn't ready yet to give away what it might be. "I've sworn to keep my mouth shut but I think that very shortly there will be something to talk about, that's for sure," he said.
