Both heavyweights are on the AFI's list ahead of the Golden Globe nominations this week.
Boyhood and Birdman continue their tussle as this year's awards season, with both movies being included on the American Film Institute's (AFI) top films of 2014. The Oscar frontrunners were joined by Angelina Jolie's Unbroken, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, Foxcatcher, Nightcrawler and the British code-breaking drama The Imitation Game.
Boyhood is the frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars
For the first time in history, the AFI chose 11 movies - instead of 10 - with Whiplash, Into the Woods, Selma and American Sniper also making the list. The selections come ahead of the Golden Globe nominations later this week, with both Birdman and Boyhood expected to pick up numerous nods.
More: Make no mistake, Birdman could blitz the Oscars
Richard Linklater's movie stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette and was filmed over a 12 year period. The film has been heralded as truly innovative cinema and is the favourite with the bookmakers to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Over the past couple of weeks, it has been named best picture by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Boston Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle. It also picked up best international independent film at the British Independent Film Awards.
Michael Keaton is the current favorite to win Best Actor for Birdman at the Oscars
Birdman stars Michael Keaton as a once great Hollywood star struggling to mount a Broadway play. Keaton is the frontrunner to win Best Actor at the Oscars.
The AFI jury has also selected its top television programmes for 2014, which includes Orange is the New Black, The Americans, Game of Thrones and Mad Men. Newcomers The Knick, Fargo, Jane The Virgin, Transparent, Silicon Valley and How To Get Away with Murder also made the list.
