The beloved TV actor died at his home in Burbank
Bob Hastings, the actor who made his name in the 1960s sitcom McHale’s Navy, has died. He was 89. His passing was announced by his granddaughter Allison Knowles. According to her announcement, quoted by TV Guide, he died on Monday, June 30, at his home in Burbank, California.

Hastings first came to be known for his role in McHale’s Navy, where he played the less-than-flattering role of a bumbling yes-man, Lt. Carpenter. He also had memorable roles on 70s staples All in the Family and General Hospital (the latter lives on today).

Hastings entered the world of showbiz at the tender age of 11, acting in various radio dramas. Following his hiatus to join the Army Air Corps during World War II, Hastings returned to voice work, giving a voice to the iconic Archie Andrews up until 1953. He quickly transitioned into TV in its infancy, snagging a role on the adorably titled Captain Video and His Video Rangers in 1949.

Later TV appearances included classics like Ironside, The Dukes of Hazzard, Major Dad and Murder, She Wrote. In recent years, the aging Hastings had transitioned back into voice work. Most recently, he voiced the video game Mafia II, released in 2010.
