So you’ll never guess who Barbara Walters crowned as her “Most Fascinating Person of the Year”. Well, ok, it’s Amal Clooney (nee Alamudin), but you wouldn’t have guessed without reading the title first, right?

Amal Alamuddin
Amal Clooney - smart, successful, gorgeous, awesome.

Now, I’m not arguing with Mrs Clooney’s fascinating-ness here. Born in Lebanon and raised in London, she’s an Oxford graduate and a human rights attorney with clients like Julian Assange, Yulia Tymoshenko, and Kofi Annan. She’s also a humanitarian and has killer style. Yet, she was only voted Most Fascinating after she married George Clooney, largely based on her success in “locking down a man thought to be one of the world’s most determined bachelors,” as per Abc's wording. For reference, in 1995, Clooney told Walters that he would never take the plunge again after his divorce in the early 1990s. That interview became the basis for his entire public persona, to the point that Clooney told Walters in a 2006 interview that he no longer had to tell women he was dating that he wasn't interested in marriage since they'd seen the first interview with Walters.

With her marriage to Clooney, Walters says, Amal joins the ranks of Jackie Onassis, Princess Diana and Kate Middleton -- everything she does, says or wears is officially... fascinating. No, you did not just fall down a wormhole through to the 1950s. This is actually an actual thing that was said in actual media in 2014.
