Anne Hathaway has weighed in to the ongoing conversation in the movie industry about actresses getting roles meant for older female characters. She revealed in a new interview for Glamour UK (on whose October edition she is the cover star) she’s already losing parts to younger actresses at the age of 32.

“I can't complain about it because I benefitted from it,” Hathaway stated. “When I was in my early twenties, parts would be written for women in their fifties and I would get them. And now I'm in my early thirties and I'm like, 'Why did that 24 year old get that part?'”

However, she’s taking it philosophically, remembering that she benefitted from the same phenomenon when she started her career. “I was that 24 year old once, I can't be upset about it, it's the way things are. All I can do right now is think that thankfully you have built up perhaps a little bit of cachet and can tell stories that interest you and if people go to see them you'll be allowed to make more.”

Her comments come not long after the likes of Emma Thompson spoke out on ageism, and how it seems to apply more to women, in Hollywood. Maggie Gyllenhaal, 37, also revealed that she had been turned down for a role on similar grounds, being told she was "too young" to play the love interest of a 55 year old man.

Hathaway’s next role will be alongside Robert De Niro in the comedy movie The Intern, due to be released on September 25th. She’s also down to reprise her turn as the White Queen in the Alice In Wonderland sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass, which is in post-production and set for the first half of 2016.

Elsewhere in the interview, the Les Miserables actress gave her opinion on the woman-of-the-moment, Taylor Swift. “She just seems to be following her heart. I met her - I hope it's OK to say this - when she and Jake [Gyllenhaal] were together. She was 20 at the time, and we hung out one night. I was like, 'You are a magnificent creature.' She was on fire and I've watched her become this force of nature.”
