Wintour appeared at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday (17th November) and discussed a variety of topics including her decision to put Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on the cover of Vogue in April 2014.
The cover caused controversy with many considering Vogue's choice of cover models to be anything but high fashion. Others, considering Kardashian a style icon, were more positive about the image. However, Wintour on Monday appeared more included to agree with the former and implied the cover was 'tasteless'.
As Fashionista reports, Wintour claimed her decision was not about taste but was reflective of culture. The Editor-in-Chief compared the Kimye cover with that of Madonna's in the 1980s and explained how that was controversial as it was placing a highly celebrity, rather than a model, on the front cover.
"I see the role of Vogue to reflect what's going on in the culture. The first celebrity that I put on the cover of Vogue was Madonna, and that was considered completely controversial at the time, too. It's such a long time ago probably no one remembers, but she was a very controversial figure. Now she's part of the establishment," Wintour said.

Unfortunately, Wintour also implied that Kimye (like Madonna in the 80s) are not people she considers "deeply tasteful". Wintour explained how Vogue thrives on being up to date with cultural changes and challenges convention whether it's placing a model in jeans (as Wintour did for her first cover) or featuring unconventional actors, musicians and celebrities.
"I think if we just remain deeply tasteful and just put deeply tasteful people on the cover, it would be a rather boring magazine! Nobody would talk about us. It's very important that people do talk about us," Wintour said.
However, Wintour was more complimentary about another member of Kardashian's family, Kendall Jenner. Jenner has recently signed with Estée Lauder to be the face of their brand and Wintour has hailed the cosmetic company's decision.
On Jenner's signing, Wintour said: "What a fantastic decision that was [signing Jenner]! They have a wonderful brand that's very traditionally American, and they decided they want to shake it up and reach a different audience. Now and again one has to do things like that. I think it's part of the excitement and part of being a journalist. I hope another Kim Kardashian comes along this year!"
