"I want to say when I was little, like Maleficent, I was told that I was different -- and I felt out of place, and too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in. And then one day I realized something, something I hope you all realize. Different is good," Jolie told the audience and all those watching at home.

The 39-year-old actress was accompanied by two of her daughters, Zahara and Shiloh. Both girls looked delighted at their mother's achievement and, upon hearing the announcement of her win, embraced her simultaneously.

The awards ceremony was the first time Jolie has been seen in public since writing an op-ed in which she revealed she had undergone further preventative surgery. Jolie carries the BRCA1 gene mutation, meaning she has a higher chance of developing breast and ovarian cancer. She underwent a preventative double mastectomy in 2013 and, two weeks ago, underwent surgery to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.

Amongst the other winners in some of the other acting categories were Ben Stiller (Favourite Movie Actor), Emma Stone (Favourite Movie Actress), Liam Hemsworth (Favourite Male Action Star) and Jennifer Lawrence (Favourite Female Action Star). The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, in which Hemsworth and Lawrence star, was voted Favourite Movie.
