The gunman, identified on Friday as 59 year old John Russel Houser, is said to have sat in the Grand 16 Theater on Johnston Street in Lafayette at 7:30pm for around 20 minutes, watching the comedy movie with other patrons. He then opened fire, killing two people and injuring nine others in an incident that was over in minutes.

After shooting his victims, Houser is believed to have attempted to exit the theatre along with the crowd of fleeing people, but spotted officers at the main door. He then went back inside, before turning the gun on himself.

Police stated to NBC that Houser was a drifter, originally from Phoenix City in Alabama, and had likely been in Lafayette for less than a month. “The information we have at this time indicates that he was by himself, he sat by himself and the first two people he shot were sitting right in front of him,” Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said in a press conference on Friday.

Reports are hailing two teachers as heroes who saved lives. One threw himself over another to protect her. Though he was killed, she was able to set off the fire alarm and therefore alert authorities and save lives.

This incident comes just a week after the Colorado theatre mass murderer James Holmes, who killed 12 people at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, was sentenced to the death penalty.
