George Valentin is a silent movie star in 1920's Hollywood. His latest film, A Russian Affair, opens to rave reviews and it seems that George has hit the big time. As he walks the red carpet, someone knocks into him.

That someone is Peppy Miller, a young woman who dropped her purse and was accidentally pushed into the path of George. The crowd waits with baited breath, wondering how George will react. To their astonishment, he laughs it off and puts his arm around Peppy, effectively inviting her into the premiere.

Their picture is all over the papers the next day, catching the attention of George's wife. George manages to convince her that nothing is going on. Despite this, George casts Peppy in his new film and over the next couple of years, Peppy becomes a rising star.

Then comes the announcement: Al Zimmer, a producer of silent films, is to end production and start work on talking films. George dismisses this idea as a fad but has no choice but to watch as his star diminishes in the rise of 'talkies'.

George fades into obscurity and grows depressed as more and more people shun silent films. In the meantime, Peppy begins to star in talkies and soon becomes a major star. Will George ever return to the heights of fame that Peppy now has?
