Valentines Day 2005 is set to be aptly graced with Aberfeldy’s third single from their critically acclaimed debut record, Young Forever. For what better day to release a song like Love Is An Arrow? Comprising as it does an atmospheric, country-tinged dissertation on the L-word courtesy of an Edinburgh five-piece specialising in bittersweet acoustic pop, like Brian Wilson’s Scottish cousins. It’s the kind of sentiment which could put Cupid out of business.
Aberfeldy, named after a seaside town songwriter and singer Riley Briggs visited in his youth which carries less than happy memories, are made up of folk drawn together from Edinburgh’s vibrant caf scene and bound by their love of song. Their music may be beautifully arranged, but their method of recording is strictly back-to-basics, sharing a single mic between them in the studio to capture the essence of the group as a whole as opposed to five individual parts. The result is a fresh sounding record, as homely and welcoming as a winter broth. ****
