In 19th century China, Snow Flower and Lily are two girls matched by laotong - a lifelong relationship that is said to be more intimate than a relationship between husband and wife, or parent and child - but both are kept isolated by their respective families. In order to talk to each other, the girls invent a secret language - called "nu shu" - and write it between the folds of a fan, which they share with each other.

In present day Shanghai, Snow Flower and Lily's descendants, Sophia and Nina, are also matched by laotong but with challenging careers and love lives, it is difficult for Sophia and Nina to keep their friendship as special as it once was when they were children in a constantly evolving city.

In order to fully understand the connection between them and their ancestors, Snow Flower and Lily, Sophia and Nina start researching into the history of the 'old days' and the lives of their ancestors before them, or else risk losing their laotong relationship forever.
