In the days after the death of American Idol alum Michael Johns, his sudden passing was thought to be the result of a blood clot. However, an autopsy reportedly failed to determine the cause of death with any certainty. Earlier on Tuesday, TMZ reported that the final conclusion had been deferred until the toxicology report comes through.

Michael Johns
Johns was loved and respected by friends, family and colleagues in the industry.

This may mean that substance abuse was involved in Johns’ tragic death. An unnamed source for TMZ has allegedly revealed some new information about Johns.

“The police were informed Johns had engaged in heavy alcohol use at some point prior to his death. And we’re told he was a heavy drinker,” a law enforcement source told the website.

The report continues, “If there was a blood clot, it would appear it was not clearly the cause of death … or else the case would be closed.  The fact that toxicology tests are being performed suggests the Coroner wants to know if alcohol and/or drugs played a part in Johns’ death.”

Johns’ family acknowledged his death in a statement on Saturday, August 2 and asked the media to respect their privacy. The statement, shared by Deadline, reads: “Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from all corners of the globe. Please keep Michael in your thoughts and respect our need to grieve privately in this difficult time.”

The days since Johns’ death have seen an outpouring of love for the late singer in the form of tweets, facebook statuses and posts to various other social media.
